Re: How do you use your basement?

Our basement is 3/4 finished; the other 1/4 is the utlities, water tanks, heater, washer and dryer.

The 3/4 that is finished contains a room with exercise equipment, with TV; a large closet for food and supplies. A full bathroom and the other side is another very large room in the process of becoming more storage (hidden behind folding doors) and then a couch/sitting room (probably another TV) and a craft area.

Previous owners used it as an illegal basement apartment, so the bathroom and generally finishing done. We just need to paint, put down flooring etc in the large part.

Well, we haven't moved into our house yet, but the basement is finished and we will probably use it as a family room/playroom and an exercise area.

I had one growing up and my parents used it the same way. We spent most of the time upstairs in the living room, but I lived down there when I was a teen and didn't want to listen to my parents music or watch their shows. My dad would go down there sometimes also to watch sports.

Ours is a huge playroom for our 2 boys. I thank God for it daily. Kids make a mess, I just close the door at night and I don't have to see it. And neither do any visitors, unless they go downstairs of course.

Our basment is our entertaining, TV, and our playroom. We even have a fireplace in our basement. It is completely furnished and we have a big bathroom with a jacuzzi bathtub. It is our favorite place in the house and the only part I really like!

I grew up in Levittown, where no one had basements. My husband never had one growing up either.

We don't really count a basement as usable space, even if it's finished, although I know that's not realistic. I know they're not all like this but we think of them as cold, damp areas that we probably wouldn't want to spend time in. (crazy, I know)

Besides a possible guest bedroom, we could only really see ourselves using one for storage. We will not be having children, and would want our tv or entertainment areas on the ground floor.

How do you use your basement?

you & I agree on alot.
I grew up on a slab so basements are gloomy & creepy to me.
DH wanted a TV room so we made 1/3 of our basement a finished room with couches & a table for games.
the other 2/3 is a small storage area, pantry, big freezer & laundry area & the rest is DH's woodshop.

I rarely go down there to watch tv, occaisionally I will just to hang out with DH.

DH has professional gym equipment - so the large part of the basement is a gym/workout area. The rest is laundry and his workshop.

I have a hi-ranch. So its two levels, but I wouldn't necessarily consider my lower level a basement. Even though it is 1/2 underground because of hte way it was built into a hill.

That said, we are currently re-doing our lower level into a playroom/den area. There is a fireplace down there, along with a full bathroom and a guest bedroom/office space.

Ours is 3/4 finished.. beautifully I might add by the previous owners. The 3/4 part is strictly DH's Theatre room complete with a 60 inch DLP TV, surround sound, PS2, leather couches and framed movie posters hanging. The other 1/4 is where washer and dryer and oil tank are. I love my basement. Chat Icon

Re: How do you use your basement?

We lived for a year with an unfinished basement---therefore it was just storage.

We have just finished our entire basement and we have just built a laundry room, boiler room (which has no use but to contain the boiler), full bathroom (which will be used as a guest bathroom) and bar/entertainment area (that DH will use to watch baseball and drink/hang ot will all his friends and play poker.

Upstairs we have a small tv room that fits the two of us if we want to eat dinner or just hang out. We have a formal dinning room, formal living room and an open kitchen that also has an island and a tv for socialization/entertainment.

ETA: when we have children it will be used as their play room and DH office.

It is also currently used as my work out room---I have a tread mill set up.

We have a large basement that is finished. There is a guest room, full bathroom, office, playroom/den, storage area and a gym/wreck area for my husband. 6 areas.

We use it fairly often.

We do have lots of nieces and nephews, and we could always lock them in the dungeon while we're entertaining. Chat Icon

I saw a commercial on HGTV the other day for these floor-to-ceiling panels that have insulation on one side where you can install it around your walls and pop them off whenever you need them.

I know that's not what most people refer to as a "finished" basement, but it's an option for people like us.

That's the Owens Corning system- it is the best. Expensive though. But unbeleivably smart- you can access the walls fro repairs, electrical or plumbing work, etc.
looks nice, too.

ETA- i use my basement to film XXX movies.

Naunie, why is the sky blue? When it rains, why don't sheep shrink? And why can't my husband fill up the Britta water pitchers when they're empty?

Looking forward to your immediate response, thanks.

We have a small basement. We use it for laundry and storage. I don't really like basements but ours is not totally below ground.
