How do you stop rocking your baby to sleep?

DD is 5months and we still rock her to sleep pretty much every night and put her down asleep. I know I need to stop this so she can learn to fall asleep on her own. She just started STTN. When I try putting her down before she is asleep she freaks out!! Any tips/suggestions! TIA

I remember this stage!! DS is now 2.5. We did CIO at 6 months to stop the rocking habit we created. 3 nights of torture but it worked like a charm!!

my DD is only 3 months but ive been trying to lessen the rocking as well. when her eyes start to close, i stop rocking and just pat her butt lightly instead. i was trying to minimize the amount of motion as shes falling asleep. everyone told me they CIO'ed at 6 months but i cant wait that long. DD is a horrible catnapper and i felt it was unfair to let her be so miserable and cranky all day so this is what im going to try to implement next week:

i felt it was something i could manage with the least amount of crying (and i still get to rock somewhat which she loves).

Great article!! I did implement some of these techniques, I like the pick up/put down method. I used it today with DD and she is napping in her crib for the second time in her life!!! (so far it has been 27min LOL). I am not a big fan of CIO, we do it a bit for night time when she wakes but she isn't hysterical. I am going to repost this article into another post. I rocked my son to sleep until he was about a year old. I remember posting the same question and the best response was (I believe from CathyB) that in time I would know when it just wasn't necessary. Suer enough by 1 he was no longer comfortable rocking. We did 3 nights of CIO and by night 4 he just laid down in his crib and went to sleep. Chat Icon

We substituted rocking with a story and sippy cup (took the bottle away at 13 months)

Re: How do you stop rocking your baby to sleep?

We did CIO with my DD when she was 7 months. It only took 2 nights, she's been an independent sleeper ever since.

When we had DS, I was DETERMINED not to repeat that mistake. Now, at 3 months, he goes into the crib drowsy and puts himself to sleep.

I did something like this with DS at 3m. He puts himself to sleep now every night. You don't have to do CIO, and you don't have to wait till 6m, many babies are mature enough to learn how to put themselves to sleep even as early as 2m. Some can't till they are much older, every baby is different. Only mommy knows whats best for baby whether its CIO or a method as described above, or continue to rock.

DS is nearly 14 months and he still fall asleep either with us rocking him or on our chests. I'm sure we'll have to sort it out, but secretly I think we all like it...! Just to say, it's not the end of the world if you rock your LO to sleep.
