how do you stop a toddler from yelling

my 2 year old daughter has recently started yelling and screaming a lot. At home she will get a 1-2 minute time out for screaming, but what do you do when we are in public (i.e. a restaurant). she seems to do it more if i tell her to, sternly, stop the screaming.
Thanks.

Re: how do you stop a toddler from yelling

We had to do a lot of teaching inside and outside voices.

If DC start yelling in a restaurant, we'll tell them that if they do not stop, they are going to go outside. If they don't stop, one of us takes the child outside or into the lobby of the restaurant and talks to them sternly saying, "We can go back to the table when you calm down. We do not yell in a restaurant. Do you understand? When you stop crying we can go back." It usually takes less than a minute before they realize they want to go back.

Inconvenient, yes, however it seems to get the point across that it is unacceptable behavior.

We've had to do this twice. All the other times the threat of going outside or leaving the table has been enough to make them stop.
