How do you Organize everything?

We're trying to really get our apartment organized- meaning, not just Hiding the clutter, but actually having a 'system' for everything... and so that when new stuff comes in, it has a place right away.

we have all sizes of storage containers, magazine files, baskets, etc.... but it seems like things just get shoved wherever there's space.

Any tips????

j/k

We have storage baskets specifically for magazines, a 12 month file folder for bills so they dont sit on the table...lol

In the kitchen I have all my spices in a basket, all my cookbooks in magazine folders....

things like that, creative ways....Neen, I know your creative....you;ll figure out a way to make it look nice.

It's so hard- I am still getting there. And would you believe I bought a whole book on home organization, and I...lost it. Chat Icon Chat Icon

The only advice I have is work a little at a time, room by room.

Flylady.com is a good site for overall organization/home maintence. It has good tips.

Re: How do you Organize everything?

in my parents house everything winds up on the dining room table - bills, newspapers, etc....when they need to use that table, everything gets moved elsewhere.

so i'm not the best to ask this question, b/c i have bills in more places then i care to think about.

and ps - this is why fh will be handling the finances of this little family

Re: How do you Organize everything?

I tackle one room at a time, and get DH to do it with me so i don't throw out anything important by accident.

-throw out any clothes that have not been worn in a year

-throw out any clothes from the "thin" days, cuz it aint happening.

-anything that hasn't been used in 6 months, like computer junk, etc, gets thrown out.

-we dont have a lot of CD's, but the ones we had, we copied to the computer and threw them out

Flylady is great. I just wish I went to it on a regular basis. I put things in piles until DH throws them out.

My friend created software for litigation managment (scans & makes searchable all documents for law firms handling class actions lawsuits). He recently had a brainstorm. Now instead of complaining to his wife that she never files anything, he scans it all & tosses it.Chat Icon

Re: How do you Organize everything?

I will definitely check out the Flylady website. I have baskets for alot of things like magazines, pictures that aren't in albums, etc. I have a file cabinet for miscellaneous paperwork and past bills, car info, etc. Then, I have a little basket type stand that I keep recent items that I need to be on top of, like bills to be paid, invitations, etc. I usually make sure to throw away anything that I don't need right away.

Re: How do you Organize everything?

I just joined Flylady after reading about it. I already tackled today's chore - to "shine the sink".

While I'm off this week my goal is to organize/spring clean one room a day.

Re: How do you Organize everything?

I've been using Flylady for the past year and that seems to help- especially with dealing with those "hotspots" where things always end up. It's about getting into routines and dealing with things once instead of putting it off until later.

i signed up for flylady-- it seems resourceful for 'cleaning', but i have that part downpat-- its the 'Organizing' part that i feel is never good enough.

all of the tips that i found online are what we're already doing-- so maybe we're just being 'too anal'? Chat Icon

Re: How do you Organize everything?

well, what parts of your home do you feel are unorganized?
Is it lots of papers, kitchen items, clothing, shoes???

Have you ever thought you may have too many "organizers" and that is where you have clutter? If you have a box, filled with smaller boxes, that may be a sign of too many "organizer" pieces.
