How do you measure temperature?
5 y.o. DS has a 103 fever since Monday night but goes down almost immediately with Motrin. I took him to the ped today to make sure it wasn't strep and he told me that temps from the ear aren't really accurate. I've been doing this since he was 1! What do you guys use?

I have one of those forehead ones. It's fairly accurate.

How do you measure temperature?
Five years old I would do under the tongue--digital thermometers are fairly quick so they only have to hold it for about 20 seconds

Re: How do you measure temperature?
Honestly, if I'm really concerned, I still do a rectal. For General tracking, under tongue... but that requires participation.

Same. But most of the time I end up doing rectal. DS is almost 2 and I get him to cooperate better lying down with a favorite book while I do it.

We have always used a forehead one. I've never ever done a rectal on any of my kids.

This. The forehead ones aren't accurate at all (I threw mine out) and the ear ones are better but still not great. I'll use the ear one if she's teething or has a cold, but if I get a really high reading I follow up with the tush.
FWIW, I had a forehead reading of 103.2 once and a rectal of 99.0. That's a big difference.

Braun ear thermometer.
This is what I use and it always seems accurate. DS had a reading of 105.2 and I took him to the ER. Their reading was 104.6...not too far off, plus taking account that it was winter and cold outside which probably took of a few tenths. I'll buy a regular mouth one to compare readings from now on.

How do you measure temperature?
I've never done a rectal temp. I usually do armpit for the baby, and my 6 year old can now do under the tongue. I have digital thermometers for them.

Re: How do you measure temperature?
I don't know - maybe I'm old school but I've only known to do rectal and then under the tongue once kids were old enough. My Ped always recommended rectal especially when DS had a string of high fevers in a 3 week period

Re: How do you measure temperature?
I use the ear thermometer. I do both ears and if it's a little off I just average the two. I also know my kids anyway so if they're off and have a fever I know it's pretty close to accurate. I also do the lips to the forehead.
