How do you know when you are ready...
how did you know when you are "ready" TTC?
I thought I wanted to wait a few years, but my 26th bday is coming in a few weeks (not that 26 is by any means old, but I am feeling baby fever-ish) now I am starting to think, well..not getting any younger and it doesn't always happen right away, maybe we should try sooner than later...
I am not sure if we are ready though... I mentioned it to DH at dinner today and he said if it's something I want, he is happy with it too- but we would have to wait at least 4 months (his job reasons-we are traveling a lot right now and it's too much-but he is done in a year and if we wait 4 months- that would be great timing)
Question is: how did you know when you were ready?

I know exactly what you mean...we've been dealing with the exact same issue.
I have a feeling that most people will say, you can't possibly know for sure when you're ready.
For us, we're feeling like it's the right time, but we're going to hold off a few months due to an out-of-state move. I think I knew we were getting close when it started crossing my mind every single day.

Re: How do you know when you are ready...
I started to feel ready when I began to picture our child in our everyday lives. I would think about taking the baby for a stroll or cudlling with the baby. Then I started to get scared and thought maybe I wasn't ready. It wasn't until we learned we will most likely have trouble conceiving right now that I realized I am ready. The thought of not being able to have a child scared (and still does) me. Do I feel 100% ready? No, but I don't think anyone ever does.
I hope this helps!

Re: How do you know when you are ready...
I think it's a natural life progression. You get married, have a stable home and then you start to think...what's next? People around you start having babies then you and your DH start to talk more about it, then you start to think that you cannot wait to start your own family!! That's how it is happening for us.

Re: How do you know when you are ready...
its funny - its almost like a moment - like one day you wake up and realize that your life will be complete if you had a child... and like before that moment happened... that feeling just wasnt there yet..
it also helped thaht dh and i had achieved what we wanted at this time, good salaries had just bought a house... i turned 30 my dh will be 34, we will we married about 2 years and enjoyed that time together, tons of support from our families.. it just seemed that everything had come together and it was the next rigth step

Re: How do you know when you are ready...
I think you also have to be done with your own wish list of personal goals -- whether its travel, career progression, whatever. Whatever you want to accomplish/experience for yourself. Because once baby comes your wants become either too difficult to pursue or simply a low priority for a decade. I think its very important to feel as though you are done with the "me" stuff so that when life becomes inflexible there are no regrets.

Re: How do you know when you are ready...
I'll be 24 tomorrow, DH is 25. We certainly have the baby bug and are just excited to create such a wonderful mircale. Of course we are nervous about it and question if we are "ready", but then again I don't know if we would ever feel completely "ready". I feel like there is always something that could make you hesitate. So, we just decided to let it ride and hopefully we will get a great surprise!

I agree...with my DH and me, we wanted to buy a house first, be happy and settled in our jobs, etc. We actually would have been ready to try about 5 or 6 months ago, but I HATED my job and was commuting from NJ inot the city and I was beyond miserable every day. It was important for me to find a job I liked and a commute I liked (which is what I have now) before starting to try.

Re: How do you know when you are ready...
thank you for all of your responses-
we have the house, Dh has a great job- I am a teacher-not working right now because I am traveling with Dh for his job-that's my only concern... We have done a bunch of traveling, I would like to do more though-
we need to wait 4 months no matter what- so I guess, we will continue discussing it for the next 4 months, see where we are
Dh told me it's because my bday is coming and it's one I am not thrilled with-soooo, maybe he is right...
