How do you know when to increase formula?

DS is just over a week old and already eating 3oz of formula per feeding. Sometimes he only takes 2oz at a feeding, but most of the time he sucks down the full 3oz. How do I know when I should bump him up to 4oz??

Also, we're using Platex Drop-ins and I'm not sure that we're using the right nipples. He seems to take forever to drink his formula at a feeding. He's not having any gas problems right now, so thats good, but I feel like he's working really hard to get the formula out of the bottle. We're using the slow flow nipples -- we tried the medium flow and he spit up, so I went right back to the slow. How do I know if the nipple is right for him?

If he wants more give him more!

It always took DD forever to drink bottles too.

DD was drinking 6oz bottles by like 9 weeks and still drinks 6oz at 6 months.

That is the same thing i was told as well. DD is one week old tomorrow and she is drinking 4 ounces per feeding now. It sometimes takes her a while to drink it all (she has a habit of falling asleep while feeding) but the doctor said feed her as much as she wants.

my DD will be 1 month old on Wed and she is up to 6oz already...

since she came home she only uses med flow nipples.

i always made her even amount bottles, so if she ate 4 she ate 4 if she ate 3 she ate 3.

now at almost 1 month i make her 6oz bottles, sometimes she eats 4 or 5 but most always 6.

as DH says what really is that extra oz if we throw it away

My ped said, when she has a day that she finishes all of her bottles to the end and still seems hungry, up the formula by a 1/4 oz each bottle the next day. If she still drinks them all down go for a quarter more the next. Stop when she starts leaving some at a feeding.

We started with the slow flow, but its taking literally 20 - 30 minutes to feed him. I have a few of those RTF Enfamil bottles (the 2oz travel ones) with the nipples that you attach -- when we feed him with those he sucks it down SO fast. It takes half the time. But I cant seem to find a playtex nipple that matches this one Chat Icon Chat Icon

You can try using a med flow nipple... or using a sterilized pin make the pin hole on the current nipples a bit larger
