How do you keep your kids healthy?

My 3 are in preschool 2 days a week and I feel like someone is always sick!

I know everyone battles this and with 3 kids the likelihood is more..
But a few questions:
1. Does it get better their second year in daycare/school.

2 anyone have any tricks on how to help keep them healthy.

3. Anyone use essential oils to help keep your dc healthy? If so which ones and how do you use them?

How do you keep your kids healthy?

If this is the first year in a school setting yes they will always be sick. My ds is 3 and has been in daycare since 8 weeks. He was always sick. Now it's so much less. Much less colds. He did just get pink eye and there is def no avoiding a stomach bug but the colds def stop being constant

I did notice that DD is sick less than when she first started daycare two years ago. I don't really do anything special aside from giving her a multi vitamin and the flu vaccine. Other than that I try to make sure she gets enough sleep.

Honestly, now that she is 4 ,she is NEVER sick.
I don't do anything special either. Her immune system is ridiculous.
I always joke that it must have been all that breast milk she got. (I used formula from day one!) Chat Icon

But seriously, I really think being in daycare since 8 weeks really built her immunity into that of a horse!

My kids have been out of daycare since last february as i decided to stay home full time. When they were in daycare they were sick ALL THE TIME!! They started preschool in September and we are just now dealing with my DD having her first real cold since starting school. I definitely think being in daycare for so long helped their immune systems now. I don't do anything special except when one gets a cold I make sure to clean all their toys they recently played with with a clorox wipe. I've always done that though.

See, I know this is recommended but I don't understand why. You're not supposed to be able to get the same cold twice. Once you've had it, your body develops immunity to that particular strain. I guess I can see doing it to try to prevent giving the cold to siblings (or friends) but I would think they're going to catch it anyway just from being around each other.

Off topic, sorry!

My son started daycare/school in October. I can't tell you the amount of colds he's had since. I am hoping the frequency of his colds will die down soon.

I do it more to try and prevent their siblings and friends from getting it. Although with 3 kids most of the time they do catch it from each other. There have been times where one of my kids had a bad cold and the other 2 didn't catch it. It rarely happens but it happens.

Re: How do you keep your kids healthy?

Probiotic.

Best thing that ever happened to us!

My doc recommended it - it's a natural immune booster. I put one packet of Culturelle Probiotic Powder Packets a day in my son's bottle. Once he was done with bottles, I would mix one packet a day in his food.

He is in daycare full time since he was five months old, he is now sixteen months old and has been sick hmmm four times? Strep once, two ear infections, and just a mucus/runny nose type thing... which, honestly, was mostly from teething!

they get a probiotic and elderberry every day. i also just started giving kefir, although ds is not a fan yet.
they eat lots of fruits and veggies
they get a decent amount of sleep
i diffuse eos when they are congested, but kid safe ones (thieves is not safe for children)i used these recipes
nothing is sure fire and they're bound to get sick but i feel like this helps a lot.

The second year is much better.

I can't do much to stop them from getting colds in preschool. DS is so very oral & always touching his face. He's just recovered from pink eye. I'm not a fan of revving up the immune system for prevention (my immune system is hyperactive & that has done bad things for me). I know certain people that swear by oils, but it was more for symptom relief.

I do keep stuff from spreading by eliminating too many toys when they are sick. With pink eye, we put on the TV and read books for the first day & it didn't spread to anyone else.

Last year, DS almost never was in school in the winter. This year, he hasn't missed a day.

The one we have is 1 and up.

We use elderberry and probiotics. If they are sneezing a lot I give vitamin c chewies.

I don't know, I think some people just have better immune systems than others. I don't really think too much else matters, aside from good basic hygiene.

I agree. We just do a lot of hand washing, wiping hands and tables, carts, etc, while we're out and I clean the house a lot.

Rite aid had the kids elderberry, and the probiotics I've gotten was from cvs.

Agree! I was always sick as a child, but my son rarely gets sick. He has perfect attendance in K this year, but so many kids in his class have been sick, as well as our neighbors, with highly contagious illnesses (coxsackie, etc.). He just seems to have good immunity.

I encourage him to wash his hands and not put his hands in his mouth, but overall don't think we go above and beyond the norm with this.
