How do you fix/replace a dead outlet?
ours died....nothing is working when plugged into this previously working outlet.
is it a big task?
why did this happen? we didn't plug in anything crazy.

Is it just the outlet, or the whole circuit? Are any of your circuit breakers tripped? Is it a GFCI outlet, or downstream from a GFCI outlet? If one of those trips, it will shut off the outlet, and any outlets connected to it for safety reasons.
A GFCI outlet has two buttons on it, in addition to the outlets. Press the reset button, and as long as there are no issues, it will turn back on.

I had this happen last week and I called my dad 
I dont like messing with electricity so if you dont know what you are doing and think its dead, call someone who knows what they are doing.

this happens to me all of the time with my bathroom outlets.
I hope it's just that.
It's not a big deal to replace an outlet but if you're not handy call an electrician.
I got some of the best electrical advice from some of the master electricians at Home Depot.

i call my dad to replace the outlet. Its not that hard but i don't mess with electricity. Normally its a loose wire (we had this happen) so you just turn off the breaker, test to see if its truly off with a meter and then tighten the wires around the lugs (not sure of the real term) on the socket. If that doesn't work the wire might of been chewed or compromised so you might have to have a electrician (this is where i all in a pro) wire the outlet.

Is anyone allowed to change an outlet if they know how, or should it be an electrician? I guess I am asking code wise, if I am making sense? Just curious, not really asking re the OP.

It's maintenance, so it *should* fall under the maintenance category of being allowed to do it. I know that nobody actually has anything inspected when replacing fixtures, since you're not doing any new wiring, changing anything code-related, etc. I don't know the technical details of the code rules, though. I can't imagine an inspection even being on the book for a replacement. Inspectors are overwhelmed as it is.
