how do you discipline your toddler/preschooler when they misbehave in school?

So DH picked up DS today from school (he is 3). The aid tells my DH Liam was a handful today, he wasn't listening and hit the teacher. (he is generally not a hitter so this angers me A LOT).

So DH asks DS what happened. DS does say he got a time out for not listening (good) but doesn't mention or remember hitting the teacher.

I love my DS, but I believe the teacher obviously. There are only 7 kids in the class.

So what would you do? Its almost too late by the time I get home to do anything about it.

Just talk to him about not hitting???

He was already "punished" with a time out in school, so to punish him again at home is kind of "overkill", besides, as you said, by the time you get to it, he's forgotten.

I would talk to him at bedtime about it and about not hitting and being nice to everyone.

If he was already given time out at school, I wouldn't do it again at home. But I would talk to him and let him know that you know that he was bad in school and that he shouldn't hit.

Mallory has been hitting lately too. She is much younger, but I know she won't know why she is getting punished when we get home. So I tell the teachers to give her time out and we do the same thing when she hits at home.

I dont punish him again at home. I also dont give him any extras, snacks, cookies etc. when I tell him NO, I mention you did so and so today, and were a bad boy. Bad boys dont get M&M's.

It sounds like he may be going through a phase similar to what my oldest went through around that age. Out of no where, he started acting out at school. Not too bad but just things that were so out of character for him. His day care is not allowed to put them in time out (against State rules apparently) but they would talk to him and have him sit down for a few minutes at the table. When we got home, DH or I would talk to him about whatever the behavior was and just try to keep on top of reminding him to treat others how he wants to be treated, etc.
