How do you address lying?

What do you do when your dc lies to your face? Like the obvious “I’m not sitting on my sister” while you’re watching them sit on their sister kind of lying...? My dd is 5 and really doesn’t get in trouble a lot (and while we are structured, we are pretty fair when she does so I don’t really see WHY she feels the need to lie...) but in any event, I’d love to hear how everyone addresses lying. Tia.

The first thing I would make sure is she understands the concept of lying and telling the truth. I went through something similar with one of my kids. We explained how he always has to tell the truth. He didn’t get it until I did it to him. He asked for juice and I said I gave it to you. He said no you didn’t. And we got into a back and forth and I said do you like when mommy doesn’t tell the truth? He said no, don’t ever do that again! Thank god that was a short lived phase until the next thing.Chat Icon
