How do OPK's work?

DH mentioned to me since we were talking about what other methods can be used to help concieve, that we try and OPK since my cycles are crazy.

I've never used them but for some reason I have in my head that they are like HPT's and once you use it it's done with.

Someone help me out Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm not sure what you mean about once you use it, it's done with?

OPKs detect a surge in LH which happens about 24-36 hours before ovulation.

They tend to look like HPTs. You basically just POAS and wait for the result. If it's a regular line test, you'll need the test line to be darker than the control line to consider it positive.

You need to test every day around the same time, between 2 and 8 pm, and after having held in your urine for 4 hours.

So you can only use the stick once? I was thinking that you could possibly refill the strips you were peeing on.

I just think buying them could get super expensive since I don't have a regular cycle and have no clue when I would be O'ing...I would be using them every day Chat Icon

Most people use them everyday.

If you have no idea how long your cycles are, you'll want to start on CD 10. My advice is to stay away from the Answer Brand tests, even though they're cheap.

Target ones are affordable, I've heard! They come with maybe 20 in the box I think.

CD 1 = the day you get your period, then you count from there.

CD 2 = day after you get your period, etc.

Have you read the thread pinned to the top of the TTC board? It might help!

It does get expensive, even with Target brand. They are $14.99 for a pack of 7 at my Target. I've been using 2 packs a month since my cycle is unpredictable. Chat Icon

That's what I was worried about. Do they work well? I was reading up on them and I've heard that they can be hard to read sometimes.

I just think it was funny that DH brought up the whole idea of using OPK's. Since I didn't know how they worked he told me to ask my LIF girls Chat Icon

So now that I have some info I'll see if he want's to try them or just stick with plain ol BDing

Well, it's like the PG tests where you compare lines, so it can be a little hard to read. On an O day (i think i have one day a month when it shows as O) it is very obviously dark, but the rest of the month the line varies in darkness and can be hard to see. It just has to be REALLY dark to count as the O line.

I'd say try for a month or 2 to see when you O, then go from there! Chat Icon That's what I'm doing. And it's still cheaper than I was paying for BCP. Chat Icon
