How do HPT's work?
I'm 7DPO but also CD29, expecting AF on 4/2 (i will be 11dpo and cd33). When should I test?
i know the clear answer is if AF does not appear, butttt the suspense is killing me! The clear blue HPT says it can detect as early as 4 days prior to AF which is today.
Of course I bought the tests yesterday and already tested yesterday but it was a BFN!

Re: How do HPT's work?
i honestly think when it says that the test can detect as early as 4 days prior to AF they are basing that on a woman who has a typical 28 day cycle so 4 days would be 10DPO. i think it is EXTREMELY rare to get a positive result before that.

Re: How do HPT's work?
HPT's are qualitative tests. It's basically just testing to see if there is a presence of the HCG hormone in your urine, which is a hormone that is present when you're pregnant. But when you're really early on, your HCG levels are so low that lots of HPT's don't pick it up until you're further along.
Hope that makes sense.

Re: How do HPT's work?
Is this your first month using OPKs?
I only ask because if it is, then you might just be figuring out when you ovulate and how long your LP is.
The LP, or luteal phase, is the time between ovulation and AF. Typically, it's 14 days... but there's a range that the LP can be.
So, you're saying AF is due on 11 DPO - that would mean you have a 10 day LP. If this is your first month using OPKs, then this will be when you figure out your LP.. so you might not actually be due for AF on that day - does that make sense?
When you're first starting out, you go based on cycle length.. but that isn't always accurate because it can change and it can be later if you ovulate later than you think...

yes, it is my first month using OPK's...it makes sense...AF is never 100% regular so I guess I may not have her come on 4/2 according to what you explained

Don't be sad!
The first month is a really good opportunity for you to learn about your cycle.
And, I only said that because I don't want you to get overly excited if AF doesn't come on that date and then you think you're "late" and think you're PG, when while of course you might be.. there's also the chance that you ovulated later than you thought and AF is due later than you thought - KWIM? I say that because it happened to me in my first month! I thought I was late and that I HAD to be pregnant.. but I wasn't. I was devastated when AF came. And I just don't want that to happen to you
