House Temperature

Now that it's getting colder outside we have turned the heat on. My DH and I don't see eye to eye on where it should be set.
We have a newborn, 7 weeks old.
What is the ideal temperature for her? What do you keep your thermostat at when sleeping with a newborn in the house?

Re: House Temperature

Not sure about the thermostat, but I have a thermometer on the monitor in ds's room & I try to have it read between 72-75 degrees when he's sleeping at night. He doesn't sleep with a blanket usually, just pajamas, so I don't want him to get too cold. When I check on him at night, I touch his hands to make sure they're not cold & make sure his neck isn't sweating. He seems comfortable at that temperature.

We've been keeping it at 74 degrees - pretty comfortable. He's 11 weeks - sleeps in PJ's + the Halo sleep sacks, so nothing too thick and want to make sure he's comfortable.

My husband and I are using a light blanket to sleep in overnight to give you an idea of what temperature it is.

Re: House Temperature

Newborns get cold very quickly and they can get hot very quickly too. 72 is ideal.

I think 68-72 is ideal for infants.

House Temperature

DS is 6 months and during the day we have it at 68, but the woodstove puts it closer to 70. At night, I have it set at 64, but the wood stove keeps it warmer. We have him in a onesie, sleeper, and sleep sack. Any hotter and I'd roast. I already find 64 to be too hot at night.

Re: House Temperature

We had a newborn last year at this time and kept our house at 68 during the day, 62 at night. He slept in footie pjs and a swaddle or sleepsack.

Re: House Temperature

My ped said try not to put the house above 70 degrees or the baby will get congested.

I don't like it hotter than that normally.

Re: House Temperature

I was so petrified of SIDS that I always kept the house at 68 when the kids were newborns (all year long). Now that they are both over 1, we keep it ~72(74 in the summer) in the kids' rooms

House Temperature

Thanks everyone.
We have been leaving it at 70 at night with her in footies and a swaddle. My husband says it should be cooler (68), I find that's cool for me. I'm assuming it would be cool for her also then.

We keep it at 72, but DS' room gets significantly colder than ours. We sweat at night and he stays between 68-70 degrees.

You don't want to overheat a newborn.
If she is in footies and a swaddle than 68 is more than warm enough.

Re: House Temperature

Our thermostat never goes above 64 degrees. We wear sweatshirts if we get cold. I would ROAST at 70 degrees! LOL

House Temperature

Every house is different and it depends if you have 1 zone or 2... Does your house get warm fast?
My house is 1 zone but heats up fast and I specifically check on my daughters room to make sure shes ok. Our house at night is 74-75, which is comfortable. My dd sleeps in pjs no blanket. Some nights even at that temp Ill put her in fleece if it sorta feels like the temp has dropped outside... Usually i keep her in cotton.

When she was an infant I put her in fleece with a sleeveless or short sleeve onesie under since they cant regulate their body heat

House Temperature

every house is different and every baby is different. My DS was always hot.....we barely had clothes on him compared to what other parents would tell me their babies were in. Out house was maybe a max of 68.

House Temperature

We have 1 zone (covering two floors) with steam heat, so it's difficult to control. We have to jack it way up to 74 to get it warm upstairs.
I just get so worried she will get too hot but if it's turned down the heat will never reach the second floor. Argh! (First winter in this house)

We do 68 daytime 66 night....

We are Sids paranoid and while they dont list a certain temp I read in an article to not let it go over 72 to ago I it. If our second floor heats up too much we then throw ceiling fan on for circulation. We also didn't use a blanket overnight, just did layers with sleep sack.

I do feel like every house is different in terms of what the temp says and how it feels in the house so I'm not sure you can go on exact temp. 70 degrees in my house is way too warm for sleeping.
