I always pronounce it as the latter; HAH-sta.

Looked it up on Wikipedia and they say that the vowel in the first syllable is an "o" like the one in "John" (they used the phonetic symbol - finally, got a chance to use the 400-level linguistics class I took in college!) Chat Icon
