I agree. I would not muzzle my dog, but I also would not allow her to disrupt the neighborhood either. If someone had an issue with my dog, I would respect them more if they came to me directly. And not with an attitude, just a nice tone pointing out that although I may be an early riser, that doesn't mean the rest of the neighborhood is.
And as far as I know, every town has a niose ordinance stating you can't do yard work or what not before a certain hour. You should point that out to them to, if they give you a hard time.

While you can't stop a dog from barking, you can curtail the behaviour. All it takes is common sense. If your dogs are outside and barking continuously, get off your a** and call them in. I can tell the difference in the way my dogs bark. If they perceive a threat, their bark will be different than if they see another animal walking by the house. A barking dog is a nuisance and the idiot owners should be continuously fined until they get the message. Morons!

I think that speaking to them casually would be a lot better than that note. It is a little harsh and might come across as more harsh then intended. I completely understand your feelings though as we have a similar situation.

the muzzle part is harsh, the rest is fine. maybe say something like "i'd be happy to work with you to find a good solution to this matter."

Actually you are because their dog is barking. If my pregnant neighbor came over in her pjs to ask me to stop by dog from barking, I would definitely feel bad about it & take steps to be more careful in the future.
If I got a note, I would try to resolve the problem but would do it begrudgingly.
I totally agree with this! I would do it in person, in your PJ's at the first sign of barking. I think they would handle that much better than a letter.

we had a MAJOR issue with our neighbors dogs the first summer we lived in our house. I kept calling public safety & reporting them, then we had a face to face confrontation. We came to an agreement & they REALLY try now to not let the dogs bark.
I was planning on buying this & installing it at the edge of my property if it continued. Luckliy it didn't.

ETS-we get along great now, I even watch their dogs for them sometimes.

Thansk Kelly - I doubt we will become best pals (they've been there about 2 years already) but thanks for the info on the no-barking device!! Hopefully we won't need it.

Calling the town isn't going to do anything. One of my mom's neighbors had a cat that would walk down the block and sit just outside mom's fence and tease mom's dog. So, mom's dog would bark at the cat. The cat's owner kept calling the police to complain, but the nusiance law in Nassau County states that the noise must be for 30 mins non stop. So if the dog stops barking for even 5 seconds, a new 30 mins starts. The cops kept explaining this to the neighbor, and asking them to keep their cat away from the dog but they didn't want to be bothered. Now that my mom's dog has passed away, the stupid cat is tormenting another dog on the block and the neighbor is still calling the police to complain.
ETA: My mom's dog passed away 4 years ago, so maybe the noise law changed, but since they are still reporting the other dog owner on the block and the dog hasn't been taken away I assume it's the same.

I can't believe these owners- it shouldn't have come to you needing to say ANYTHING.
We just moved into a townhome and I have been TERRIFIED of Luna barking when we're not home. I even approached the neighbors and told them to PLEASE let me know if she's ever disturbing.
We let her potty out in the backyard at times (usually she gets walks), but her @ss would be back in the house if she started barking!
Hopefully this works for you.....
