Update.
Ok, so this made NO sense. We went from a HIGH bill of $225-ish to $600 to $1500.
We called today and said "W+T+F??".
These last 2 bills were ESTIMATES based on last years bill. They havent been able to read the meater so they are just basing it off of last year.
Last year the tenant renting the house was a SAHM. Its a 3500 sq ft house so they must have been running the heat forever, all the time.
National grid said we should just read the meeter and get it to them.
PHEW!

Do you live in a Skyscraper? I have lived in my house for 12 years. I have a 3 bedroom ranch, LR, Den, HUGE kitchen, office and bonus room. I am on a budget with Keyspan and it would take me 6 months of bills to equal that

Call up and tell them you want to be on a budget. I believe you have to be a customer for at least a year to get a budget. That is how it was for us but that was 12 years ago.

How high do you set your heat? Do you have a programmable thermostat that you can turn down to 65 when you are not at home during the day? I would call your energy company to come and do a free energy audit. They can recommend things to do to fix your home. In the mean time I would go to Home Depot or Lowes and get the film you can put on your windows. It might leave a few marks when you take it down, but it will save you some money from heat escaping through your windows. Do you have any holes in your home or in your basement? Call your energy provider and ask them to have someone come out and re-read your meter. It is possible that they could have keyed in your number incorrectly into their system.

what?? no way!! something has to be broken!
my parents have a 2 floor 3 br partially finished ranch and theirs was 200 this month.
i have a 3 br apartment which is very drafty and i baked for hours and it was 250 for the month and I wanted to cry!
get the meter checked asap that i waaay too much!

That's insane! The highest ours has been was like $500 and that was an "estimated" bill b/c they only read the meter every other month. I would have them come check everything!

That has to be wrong! Maybe an error was made. I would call. We keep the heat pretty high and heat 3 floors. We use our bbq all the time and our bill is low 200's for 6 weeks (on budget)

Definitely get that checked. We have a 5 bedroom colonial with vaulted ceilings and our gas bill in the winter is $300-400 and we use gas for our dryer and oven.
ETA: We are not on balanced billing.

We have a small, 3 bedroom home and are on balanced billing with National Grid. Our gas bill monthly is $175.00. Our gas pays for our heat and to run our dryer/oven/stove.
When the year is up, I believed I have paid between $400.00-$500.00 for the final bill.
Something sounds way off with your bill.

We just got a pretty high bill (not that high, though!). It was an estimated reading. I've got to get to the meter and compare readings (tons of snow in the way, though!).
Is that an est. reading? Nonetheless, it's high!!!

Mine was $445 this month, we live in a colonial which has 50 year old insulation and partly gutted. I can feel cold air through my house so we keep the heat at 68. There has to be some sort of problem with your meter or you were estimated and you went over at a reading.

Keyspan has made an error on our bill 3 times! They read the meter wrong and our bill was a few hundred dollars more that it should have been. DH told them, my wife is home all day and would have seen or heard the guy in the back yard reading the meter. The woman on the phone said, they read it from the truck. They have some kind of thingy that electronically reads it. it could be picking up our neighbors meter. check your usage on your bill against your meter or have them come check it out.

My parents have a 3 family house with 2 floors of tenants and their apt, and they are on a budget plan. thats probably their bill all year...holy crap. call them to come check the meter, that sounds wrong.
I have oil heat and thats probably what we spend in OIL for the year.

Your meter has to be broken. I am a SAHM and my old house, always would keep the heat cranked and I never had a bill that was more than 400. No way. That's not right. call them and find out what is going on. Oh and my meter was broken once too but I had small bills then, not large ones but my point is something can be wrong.
