Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

-We decorate the tree the day after Thanksgiving and decorate the house.
-Get a new ornament for one of our trees. We have two trees. A formal one in the living room and the other in the basement with all the ornaments we have collected every year since we have been married.
-Play Christmas songs after Thanksgiving while putting up the tree. I put on KJoy and listen to it the entire weekend.
-Watch Christmas Story marathon day of Xmas. Along with the Charlie Brown movie and Home Alone. lol
-We open one gift at midnight of Christmas and one the morning of. When we go to my parents we open the remainder of the gifts after dinner.
-Every year my mom and MIL get us a new addition to our village. We add the new house/people on Xmas day.
-Xmas we have a turkey (I make) and ham (MIL makes) dinner. My mom makes her famous rice and potato salad. I make my yummy sweet potatoes and spinach dip. My dad makes egg nog type Spanish drink except it has liquor in it.
-Xmas night after dinner we play games-board games, cards or Wii type games with my entire family. We just started this since my brother went to college and is so much fun.

I didn't realize how many traditions we had...

I plan on doing smores Xmas Eve with home made hot chocolate while watching Xmas movies Chat Icon

We aim to get the tree up and decorated thanksgiving weekend. then the whole christmas village - lemax & dept 56 go up. 2 6ft long tables & a card table.

nov 1 - dh locates the christmas music stations. after thanksgiving all the christmas movies come out to watch and they get played ALOT(national lampoon, christmas story, elf, christmas with the kranks, surviving christmas, the family stone, charlie brown christmas & more)

at thanksgiving dh's grandma will hand out christmas socks to all the girls. then everyone picks names out of a hat too for a gift exchange christmas day.

A week before christmas IL's have us over to make the press christmas cookies. and it use to be the annual christmas party (of appetizers & desserts) but is discontinuing this year)

christmas morning is amazing. FIL makes scrambled eggs and sausage. MIL makes cinamon buns. We get massive presents from IL's half are still "from santa".

we are also starting ds on getting an ornament each year which he can take with him(loved that idea from on here)

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

We do new PJs for the kids Christmas eve.

New ornament each year for the family and for each DC.

Church on Christmas eve. We are where our fancy clothes on Christmas Eve because we go to church and wear festive comfy garb on Christmas day.

I think we are going to start putting up the tree right after Thanksgiving (used to do it 2 weeks before Christmas). I like the idea of cocoa, egg nog.

We read T'was the night before Christmas on Christmas Eve and the Christmas Story.

We drive around looking at lights.

We used to go to Rockefeller center to see the tree between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now that we live out of state we found a new place to make an annual "pilgrimage"-the Biltmore Candlelight Christmas in Asheville, so excitedChat Icon

Everybody gets their own special wrapping paper. Makes opening gifts easierChat Icon

Also-and this is not a tradition but more of a practice-we take all toys out of the packaging and put batteries in everything before we wrap them. So much easier on Christmas morning since they are ready to go!

I like the glitter and oatmeal reindeer food, I think we may start to do that.

I want to do a Christmas special movie night-maybe the night the tree goes up do a marathon of frosty and other specials that the kids would like.

Great thread, I'm getting excited!

One tradition that my family had- something very very small- I have always wanted to keep going with my own family. My mom always snuck our stocking into our rooms while we were sleeping so we'd have something to open right away on Christmas morning. I think she also did that because half the time they weren't ready for us downstairs!Chat Icon

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

On Black Friday we hit a few stores ...ie target, and of course the Disney Store...we pick out a Christmas Gift for Toys For Tots...from the disney store that each boy gets to pick on his own ornament, (I will pick Andrews lol). We get our family Ornament made, and than go home and put up the tree and decorate the house. While we are doing this we listen to Christmas Carols. We will be doing the Elf on the shelf this year too...lol. Somehow we always end up talking about DH's mom, or saying something out loud to her while doing the decorating. (It was her fav thing to do, and we have alot of her ornaments on our tree. Plus it's always a reminder that even though she is not with us in body she is always here in spirit.) Starting black friday we read the night before christmas and the grinch who stole christmas every night to Teddy and Andrew. We get a small tree and every day before xmas we make a new ornament.

Christmas Eve I make a special breakfast, we feed the reindeer, (glitter and oatmeal too). We make our cookies for Santa, and decorate them. Than we head to Aunt Fry's. (Her name is Fran teddy calls her Fry) for an amazing meal. We always watch the classic christmas movies Miracle on 25, Grinch who stole christmas, Christmas Vacation, Christmas Story, and Garfield Christmas...(I knowChat Icon ) Also I am hoping to add the polar express this year.

we do alot of what people already posted, started elf on a shelf last year and its fun...but the one thing i grew up doing that we do every yr for our girls is get one new ornament each...when i was old enough and had my apt, i had a tree full of memories from it and i can't wait to pass it along to my girls one day too (of course I Chat Icon thinking about it, but to think that they will remember stories about the ornaments one day like i do, is too cool for me!) Love this and we also started this last year for Riley!! Another one is every christmas eve we will read the night before christmas we always read that every x-mas eve and then we would go off to bed. I plan on doing the samething with Riley!!

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

my mom & her GF would buy us new PJ's & take us to toys r us on christmas eve. We'd each get to pick one toy. we'd go home, get in our pajamas and play with that one toy until it was time to open gifts. Also, I'd like to wrap the doorway and have DS rip through it to get to presents (when he's old enough.

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

also a few times we dressed as elves on christmas eve to deliver gifts to a child we chose from letters to santa. I remember one year the girl only wanted sailor moon stickers. we drover to her in harlem and brought stickers, the doll, a dollhouse and more! her eyes just lit up!!! it was awesome to see her so appreciative. The mother was also so thankful. I hope to teach my son about being giving.

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

Can it possibly be that I am still ahormonal mess 10 months later or is this just what its like being a parent? Because I am actually crying right now as I read this thread

Anyway dd was only about 2 weeks old last Xmas so this is technically her 1st. Every Xmas eve we have a huge party at my moms. "santa" (some uncle) comes and gives all the kids 2 or 3 gifts.

Christmas morning I want to start the tradition of hiding 1 special present somewhere in the house for dd and after she is done opening all her gifts we can send her off to find the "special" one. We stay in pj's all day and then just my immediate family comes over with all the leftovers from xmas eve to have for xmas dinner.

We will also be doing our annual christmas lights drive by with hot cocoa and xmas music playing in the car.

I cant wait for xmas Chat Icon

I also LOVE being able to carry on traditions with my DD that have been a part of our family for generations. It's such a special time of year!!

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

- Tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving

- Elf of a shelf appears the morning after the tree goes up

-Kids wear matching Xmas PJ's

-DH and I wear Xmas Pj's (matching WHEN I can find them)

-Everyone gets a special ornament every year (my DH's aunt usually buys them, if not then I purchase them myself...last year DS#1 was into swimming- so he got a swimmer, DS#2 was into elmo he got an elmo etc...)

-Celebrate with extended family Xmas eve- Xmas day is usually smaller (calmer- LOL) with immediate famiyl.

We always leave out reindeer food and cookies for Santa :) and DH and I always set up; after the kids are in bed :)

Id really like to start going to candelight service on Xmas ever; as we always did that when I was a kid....

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

love this thread!

The night we pick out & start decorating our tree we have breakfast for dinner. We started this our first married Xmas.

Xmas eve is always spent with DH family. It's a true Sicilian 7 fish dinner and we eat until midnight. His uncle dresses as Santa and delivers toys to the kids. This will be DD's first xmas and I can't wait to see how she reacts to Santa!!

At my parents house, when we put the Angel on top of the tree we say "PAPA! I found the tree toppa!!!!" lol It's from a book my parents read to us when we were little.

We also open gifts to the same Chipmunks Christmas CD we've had since the 90's!

I can't wait to start new traditions with my DD as she gets older Chat Icon

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

We watch Christmas movies which includes
Bad Santa adults only, polar express, Christmas vacation
Christmas eve with DH family
Go to NYC to see Santa at Macy's, Rockefeller center, toys r us in time square and battery park
We see a Christmas carol at Theater 3 in Pt. Jefferson
We usually see Trans Siberian Orchestra but will be missing this year.
Just order elf on the shelf. DS is 2 1/2. He is already talking up Christmas.

We have a Christmas elf that comes each year. He doesn't just sit, he gets into things...tries to bake stuff, leaves a mess, leaves little gifts, etc. Then he reports back to Santa if the kids are naughty or nice. Last year he made a zip line from the top of the Christmas tree to the front door. It was pretty funny and the kids get a kick out of waking up to see what he got into next. The elf might bring a partner in crime this year Chat Icon

Re: Holiday Traditions Thread - Please Come On In

I love this thread!!!!!!!

1. We put the tree up and decorate the day after Thanksgiving. We make hot chocolate and play xmas music while we deocrate.

2. My mom bakes what she calls "Christmas morning treasure buns" every Christmas morning and we eat them while we're opening presents.

3. We each get a new ornament for the tree every year

4. Every year my dad buys my mom and I a box of our favorite chocolate covered pretzels for our stockings.

5. We always leave christmas cookies and milk out for Santa.

6. In past years, Xmas Eve was for extended family and Xmas day was spent at home playing with our gifts. This year we're moving into our first place and we have DS, so xmas eve will be with extended family again but I think xmas morning we will invite both sets of Grandparents over to open presents with DS and have a big Christmas brunch.

This thread gave me some great ideas - I love reading everyone else's traditions. I think this year we'll start Elf on a Shelf for DS and I love the pajama idea for xmas eve! Also love the idea of camping out under the xmas tree and watching movies.

To the OP - great thread idea!! I'm bookmarking this one Chat Icon

This is great! Love some of these ideas...especially the living room camp out one. I think we might have to try that. I'm hoping to start more and more traditions but for now we do:

-Christmas PJs
-Milk & cookies for Santa and food outside for the reindeer
-Going to see all the houses set up with Christmas lights and displays (DH and I started this when we were dating. There are some neighborhoods near us that go all out.)
-Baking Christmas cookies
-Listening to Christmas music and watching Christmas movies while decorating
-Elf on a Shelf (we haven't started yet because DD is too young but might get it for this year)
-New ornament each year
