Holding Hands Over Ears?
For the past few days, my 16-month-old DD has been holding her hands over her ears every time I turn on the faucet in the sink. Is this normal? I made the mistake of googling it, and now I'm scared something might be wrong with her. TIA

Re: Holding Hands Over Ears?
My 3 year old started that around 16 months but anytime we put on something loud like the vacuum. I asked the Ped & was told he could be sensitive to certain louder sounds but usually its a phase. He rarely does it now at 3 unless its something extremely high pitched.

My DD did that at that age too. Just a phase They are getting older & experiencing/learning different sensations/sounds/reactions. Don't worry & don't google (lol). It's normal!

Re: Holding Hands Over Ears?
My DS (now 18 months) did that too. I thought he had an ear infection, but he was fine. Doesn't do it much anymore.

Re: Holding Hands Over Ears?
Thank you! I'm getting a little worried about her development because she only has 2 or 3 consistent words, so now I'm over-analyzing everything. Thanks for the replies

Re: Holding Hands Over Ears?
I wouldn't panic, my one DC did this for YEARS, probably from almost 2-4. Even things like rustling through a toy bin would make DC hold their ears. We made the mistake once of going to the air Show at jones beach and also a fireworks display and all hell broke loose.
With that said, DC is now in elementary school, has stopped and is PERFECTLY FINE, just has/had sensitive ears.
DO NOT GOOGLE. Google is not your friend and ALWAYS gives you worst case scenario first.
Please feel free to FM me if you want to talk.

Re: Holding Hands Over Ears?
One of my twins was doing this around 16 months. I was worried she had an ear infection. nope, just experimenting with sound. She stopped doing it 1.5 weeks later. We also had their well check up in that window and there was no infection in her ear. My ped said not to worry.

Re: Holding Hands Over Ears?
My DD (who's almost 3) still does this with loud sounds or unfamiliar noises. She's super sensitive to sound so is always wary of new noises. I wouldn't worry about it.

Holding Hands Over Ears?
My DS, who will be 16 months on the 6th just started doing this this week as well. Seems like it's pretty normal and they are experimenting with sound.

Holding Hands Over Ears?
It could be a sensory issue with sounds. Does she do it with anything else?
