Hmmmmm, vehicle dilemma
I have had my 2001 Galant forever. I love my car, I take great care of it, it has 85K miles. ETA: It has been paid off for over 3 years.
I just heard about a friend who has to sell a 2001 Explorer with 27K miles for between 5 and 6 grand.
Would you offer $5,000 (cash) or keep the car you have. I am trying to consider space (my hubby is 6'4"), gas, mileage, repairs, etc.I don't really drive far and 27K miles sounds nice. WWYD?

I agree - and although you may not drive a lot now, will you be out and about more with dd? Just a thought.

Re: Hmmmmm, vehicle dilemma
I say get it.. great space for later use and better in bad weather.
For that price its a steal.
I have a 01 small suv (tribute) which is smaller than the explorer and it had 60k when I got it 2 years ago! I would have drooled to find an explorer for $5k-$6k!!!

Re: Hmmmmm, vehicle dilemma
personally, I'd avoid an explorer like the plague... you will never EVER be able to sell the darn thing.
Frankly, throughout my life, my parents only had sedans like your galant and never had a space issue with the car. If I were you, and the time came and I eventually needed to replace the galant, I'd instead be in the market for a mid-sized hatch back sedan with a split fold-down seat and good fuel economy. (can you tell I'm a prius owner )
That way you definitely have enough trunk space while maintaining enough seating for a car seat and a passenger ... and you will be paying 1/3 the cost in gas

I would keep your car. You know it and you know how well you take care of it and it's reliable.

Re: Hmmmmm, vehicle dilemma
As someone who now has an SUV (2007 Toyota Rav4) I say go for the truck!! It is SO, SO nice having so much space in my truck!! The seats flip down flat to create even more room............there is nothing I can't lug around with my truck. I am glad to have it now when the baby comes because even with trucking around a stroller and having a car seat in the back I will have PLENTY of room for other people and other stuff in my car. If you drive fairly local I wouldn't sweat the gas too much. If it makes you feel any better I drive from Stony Brook to Queens every day with my truck so imagine my gas bill!!

I agree. I would keep the Gallant rather than trade in for a gas guzzler, especially with gas being so darn

Re: Hmmmmm, vehicle dilemma
What's the catch? 5000-6000 sounds very low for a car with only 27000 miles to be honest. Or is that the Kelly's blue book value?

if you could keep your car since its paid off, and offer the 5,000 i would do that. this way you have the truck for family outings and if its just you an the baby you have your car.

KBB value for "good" condition is $7,000. He inherited the car and needs to sell it immediately. I guess he needs the $.

That sounds like a good idea. Only thing is do you have the $ to insure both vehicles?

I would go for the car, not only do you know the history of the car you own, it will cost you less in gas , maintenence and insuarance premiums.
Although people FEEL safer in SUVs they are not safer. Based on crash and insurance data, cars are safer than SUVs - this is one of the reasons why it costs you more to insure an SUV, another being the higher costs of repair if you are in an accident.

That depends on which car you're in
I own both a SUV and a sedan.
If I got hit by an SUV in my sedan I’d probably be toast (hence THATs why it costs a little more for SUV owners to pay for insurance because damaged caused by them) However, if I were in my SUV and struck by a sedan I’d be less likely to have the same damage. This is factoring in just liability (damages caused by you) physical damage (or repairing YOUR car) is based on the value of that vehicle, SUV or not.
I agree though. People fake themselves out with SUV’s a little too much. Safety is in the driver not the vehicle. But there’s always the other driver you have to contend with. If all drivers could possible drive as safely as possible, we’d all drive coupes! LOL
Still I have a compact SUV (tribute) and a Sedan (Mazda6) and both are fully insured with $500K liability limits and $500 ded. I only pay $245ish for both monthly so about $2450 a year.
I find the SUV priceless since I was hit by a drunk driver in an SUV and thankfully was fine. I know that accident would have turned out differently with my sedan. I also can move mountains in my truck and that’s a benefit for me. I have my bike rack on the truck in the summers and it’s a great car to ‘trash up’ since it’s the truck. I get out of my drive way easier in the snow (though I caution, having 4wheel driver, antilock brakes, traction control etc or just an SUV does NOT make it safer per se). I have enough clearance in my truck to the ground that I do feel better in the rain driving it.
I guess I got lucky on gas because my Tribute (V6) isn’t that bad on gas and only slightly more than my car (also a V6). Plus I don’t drive it all over the world. I do take it on long trips because its just nice to have that extra arm/leg/head room and feel comfy when on long trips.
If you can keep your car and get the truck, I say again, go for it. Its always better to have options.

Re: Hmmmmm, vehicle dilemma
I have a small SUV (03 Jeep Liberty) and we really don't drive much at all (car has less an 22K miles)
Recently we've been doing more Queen to LI weekend trips and I'm putting $65 of gas (that's regular gas) in every other week.
I'd much rather have a car at this point.
Would you get rid of the Galant or keep both cars? If you could keep both I'd buy the truck. If not, I'd stick to the car.
