High Blood Pressure?

Anyone else have high blood pressure every time they go to the OB? My doctor said at my levels she is not overly concerned, but they do have to keep an eye on it. They are doing a blood test and a 24 hour urine collection to check for protein. I am worried. Dr. said I could be at an increased risk for preeclampsya if it gets worse. Chat Icon

On a happy note - everything else looks good and I heard the baby's heartbeat which made me feel better. They should have taken my BP after I heard the HB!

Re: High Blood Pressure?

I consistently have a high bp bc of nerves. I think it's the top number that goes through the roof. It's mentioned every time but they haven seemed overly concerned. I go again tomorrow and will let you know if they say anything being that I'm 20 weeks now.

That's the number that is high for me, too - the top number. I honestly think I just have anxiety when I go to the doctor - this time I just wanted to hear the heartbeat because it had been a month since I last heard it and I obviously haven't felt movement yet.

Good luck tomorrow!

Re: High Blood Pressure?

If you think it's anxiety related, it could be lab coat syndrome. That's where your BP is high in a medical setting but normal otherwise. Is there any way you could monitor your BP yourself (outside of a doctor's office)? I know some CVS pharmacies have those DIY blood pressure machines you could try. I don't think they're 100% accurate but they should give you an idea of what your BP is on a normal day. I used to get this all the time, my BP would be through the roof anytime I went to my OB.

Re: High Blood Pressure?

I have high bp due to the pregnancy and was put on medication to control it. From what I understand it's the bottom number that they are more concerned with. I get a lot more monitoring then someone with normal bp, more sonos and starting at 32 weeks I'll have a non stress test once a week as well as a growth sono to monitor the baby's size. There is a risk of lower birth weight in women with high bp.

Re: High Blood Pressure?

Yesterday, my top number was slightly elevated when the nurse took my BP. The doctor took it again at the end and it was normal. She said that it was just visiting her office that did it!

Same for me on all accounts!

I have pregnancy induced hypertension. Meaning I don't have high BP when I am not pregnant! This is my 3rd pregnancy, and while my BP was high in my other 2, I was never on medication for it.

Until now. I am on 300 mg Labetalol, 3x a day. It's been "ok" not great. I just went to doctor yesterday and had some pretty high readings over last weekend. He is now monitoring me weekly for the rest of my pregnancy (I am 30 weeks today). I will have a growth sono and NST and bio physical profile each week. Yesterday, everything looked good, the baby is 3 lbs 11 oz and in the 66% for my 30 weeks (so far, I have no indication that the high BP is making my baby small!).

On top of it all, I also have gestational diabetes too, so I not only monitor my BP from home, I also do 4 blood sugar readings a day!

It happens to me when I am stressed about getting to my appt. on time. They always know when I'm rushing to get there by my blood pressure. So far it hasn't been enough for them to be too concerned though.

Re: High Blood Pressure?

I have had high bp this week but its finally leveling off. At my highest I was 140/90.
My OB says its possibly gestational hypertension and its common for pregos near the end. (I'm 37 wks tomorrow)

She told me to make sure I get some more sleep since I have'nt been getting as much lately.

hth

ETA: Doc may put me on meds if my bp stays high next week.

Re: High Blood Pressure?

My BP was high during the first trimester with DS because I was always nervous at each appointment. You can always ask your doctor to take another reading towards the end of your appointment when you're probably a little more calm.

My BP was fine during the second trimester and then was high throughout the third trimester. I did have pregnancy induced hypertension and severe swelling from 29 weeks on. By 36 weeks, I was on bedrest and wasn't allowed to go past 38 weeks. I was definitely concerned, but everything turned out ok in the end.
