My favorite was when a realtor knocked on the couples apartment door and said, "Congratulations, you've just closed on your house." and handed the keys over to them.

NY is very different from a lot of the country in real estate sales. In CA our REA came to our house with the keys to our new place. We didn't have to be at closing, we signed everything 2 days before and she went for us. No lawyers.

When we sold, we were in NY and didn't have to be there either. We signed and faxed everything and had our money transferred into our bank account.

We only watch House Hunters International but I think they're coached to come up with good and bad things to say about every place, in order to throw the viewers off of guessing which one they pick. Sometimes the worst thing they can complain about is the wallpaper maybe?

I also think that there are a bunch of people who are starting new businesses in new countries and since you can apply to be on these shows, that they're doing it for the free exposure.

We really like HHI though because it's interesting to see the disparity on what you get for your money depending on where you are. A 2 million dollar bungalow in Barbados wasn't half as nice as a $400,000 house in Bali.

DH has his own construction company and gets beyond irritated with most of the shows on HGTV because of how unrealistic they are.


Ironically, he has had work featured on a couple of shows that were based in the NYC area. I don't think they're on anymore though. One was called "Urban Outsiders". I have to ask him the name of the other. I know they were both landscaping shows.

Both of us get irritated with the big, beautiful houses that most of the people are looking at for so much less than you will ever see here on LI.

And how "quick" they can make weeks long projects happen, and for little $$$. Yeah, right.
