Here's Freddy
His butt's still sore..we are on it! He had PT today and they got him up out of bed standing with a walker!!!! He really didn't stand that much but he got up and then they put him in a chair. He is was really good today and coherent. I left him in the chair reading a newspaper and watching the Yankee game. I don't think he can read yet, but he looked at the words and it looked like he was scanning the lines. He did say, "too soon" meaning I think he understands that he has some issues. I told him he may go to rehab in Bayshore and when the PT asked him where he was he said Bayshore..not St. Francis..I misled him and confused him.
He's had a lot of time to think laying there all day and he was talking about his neighbor..anyway..he had a lot to say today. He was able to pour his own water into the cup and drink. They are so scared to let him do anything on his own but he can. They feed him too and he can do it. I can't wait until he gets to rehab..they will get him going. The hospital is not the place for the long term. It's good for saving lives and a short stay but long term not so much.
Dh helped them get him up and when we were leaving Fred said, "thanks for the help". He responded to all the commands and listened and obeyed all instructions like touch your nose..etc..I know this doesn't sound like much but from where he was after cardiac arrest, pupils fixed and dilated and on a vent..this is a major accomplishment.
On another note, someone told me that New Island Hospital is closing. I sure hope so. SO glad we got him to St. Francis but even they are annoying me due to the lack of activity Fred is getting. Like I said, good for some things..
Thanks for listening. Anyone have a first floor one bedroom apt for my bro (no steps in front please). He will need someplace to live once he gets out of rehab which could be really soon.

Yeah, maybe. Also I hooked up with an agency that helps disabled people with resources. I just have a suspicion that landlords won't want a disabled person in their apt. I hope I don't run into that. He will need home health care aids with him especially in the beginning. He will need to go to dialysis 3x a week. There is a service, Able ride that will do door to door for $3 each way as well. I know more about this crap than I ever wanted to.

You are the best sister! It sucks having to find out so much, but to know there is something available is awesome.
Hang in there, the worst part of the ride seems to be behind you!

So happy about the updates I know you might find some resistance when you look for apartments, but they cannot discriminate because of your brother's disability. If you sense that's what is going on, I would gently *remind* them of the law, and if all else fails, tell them you have a damn good civil rights attorney on your side

Re: Here's Freddy
I went back tonight to see him again since I won't be there tomorrow. He was very tired and since he had dialysis today that knocked him out.
As I was leaving one of the ICU nurses was heading in and she asked me how it's going. I told her where he was and she wanted to see him. We walked up together and wouldn't you know it, he remembered her name.
He can't remember how old his kids are but he remembered her.
She thought he looked great and he was so good. She said that another patient in ICU just lost his leg too and she was thinking about Fred. She couldn't believe how good he was and all the nurses there were happy about his progress.
Keep hoping he continues to do well.
I just poured myself a glass of wine, got some Chinese food and I'm ready to watch my DVRd Law & Orders.
Here's to me!.....and Freddy!

Although I know you're right there are just so many things to work out for him...the rehab facility, where he goes after, the medicare/medicaid thing..all of the outside help he will need going forward. He's got a tough ride ahead of him but as my therapist said, he had a pretty miserable life before so maybe this is better..maybe he's happy to be taken care of.
He asked for a cup of coffee today but it was too hard to drink a hot liquid..he couldn't stead his hand tonight..like I said, he was exhausted.

Doesn't sound like much? Are you kidding me. This IS big news! He should be proud of every accomplishment, Big or small, because they are all important to his recovery. GO FREDDY : I'm sure it's getting harder for you trying to figure out his next step, but you're doing great. Hang in there!

You bet..Idon't know if he'll be able to handle living on his own. He can't live with me because that will surely lead to divorce. I wonder if there are group homes or halfway places for people to get them incorporated back into the community? He may not be able to live totally on his own without help. Maybe eventually, but right out of rehab, I doubt it.

without his outstanding nurses, he would be nowhere. Even the cleaning people that clean the rooms come in, they say hi to him.
