I had to share this.

Henry Rollins comments on Steubenville Rape case

He really hit the nail on the head of just how deep this issue is. It
s a societal issue...not just about two boys. I do agree with him about how longer prison sentences are not the answer. I think first reaction is "lock those animals up" but after thinking about it rationally, I'd much rather these boys be forced to do community service for women rather than just rot in a cell and wind up as products of a failing system. Don't misunderstand me...they deserve to do time. What they did was disgusting and wrong. I'd just like to see more work towards a solution to FIX our broken society rather than just lock people up to rot and let them back out. We pay too much in taxes to not work on rehabilitating these criminals into contributing members of society.

Well thats where we differ. You CANT fix this. They cant be fixed. I dont believe pedophiles can be "fixed" either. This boys will sadly (IMO) be disgusting human beings forever. I do believe they were raised that they were great, blah blah blah, nothing could possibly happen to us kind of upbringing. I dont care if they were raised by the Queen herself, they are animals, and animals need to be locked up.

Because you know what, they'll get out in a few years. That LITTLE girl, is permentally fcuked. Thats who I feel bad for.

JMO of course

ITA! They don't give a shit about what they did, they give a shit they got punished when they were probably assured over and over they were untouchable.

I would like to see them work in a rape outreach center just to see what happens after the fact. Not that it will do them any good, but I want that experience in their brain (if that makes any sense)

I'm not sure if you're understanding what I mean. I agree, the victim is the one serving a life sentence. But I also think somewhere along the line these kids were failed...the whole lot of them not just the 2 convicted but the ones in the videos and who posted those horrible things on twitter etc. . Somewhere along the line they learned that this was ok. They are old enough to know better and so I put the blame of their actions on them but I also think their parents or coaches should really take a look at how their children thought this behavior was ok. I'm not sure if these boys can be fixed...BUT We can absolutely change the way we as a society handle rape culture and how we raise our children. I do think we need to look beyond just these two boys and consider what it was that lead them to believe this was ok.

for instance...wasn't it one of the moms or legal guardians that posted a rant on twitter about "hoes gonna be hoes"in regards to the case or something like that? That right there shows me exactly where he got the idea that his behavior was ok.

They definitely deserve to do the time the y were given and I agree that they didn't care especially when they texted her afterwards asking if they would need to go to court for this. I just think they should do outreach while in jail rather than just do nothing. I think they need to hear women's stories and work with them and for them.

I agree that it is a societal issue in that the culture created in their hometown (and many other places) think that there actions are ok. It is also a CRIMINAL issue. There is no flipping way I'd want these guys doing community service FOR WOMEN.

They need to understand that there are very real criminal consequences to what they did to this girl. That being unconscious DOES NOT EQUATE consent.

Lock them up. Lock them up for a long enough time that the next asshole that thinks he can violate a woman is clear on the consequences he will suffer.

I agree with some of what he says, as well. I also believe that the blame doesn't just lie in these two boys. Michael Nodianos is partly to blame. Everyone at those parties who did nothing to stop it- but instead took pictures/videos or peed on her in the street-they are partly to blame. The ones who tried to cover it up are partly to blame.

I wish they'd all be brought up on charges, but since that isn't the case- I DO believe that these two should get the maximum time allowed- in this case, until they are 21. After that they should have to do community service of some sort, maybe something dealing with rape. They should wear the 'sex offender' label forever. They may not be completely to blame, but they still committed a heinous crime against this girl and should be punished accordingly.

They need to be made an example of. I bet no one that knows them will do something like this again- at least not without thinking twice about it.

I was just going to say that! I'm disappointed the other boys didn't get held accountable too. Though it seems they may get what's coming to them soon.

I do think the boys should have gotten more time simply because I believe it was more than just "digital penetration" as ma'lik richmond was charged with. So in that sense, yes more time should have been given based on a charge of rape and not "digital penetration". Unfortunately they couldn't prove that. more than 1 year should have been given I think...perhaps til 21. But I personally think America's incarceration system is broken. We have the highest incarceration rate in the world and most of our criminals wind up back in the system so I do think we need to rethink how we handle criminals and wether or not we are doing whatever we can to help turn them into positive contributing members of society if it's at all possible. So I don't think a charge as adults would have been the right way to go because that is a charge of 20 years or so. (I do think some people can change...not sure about rapists and pedophiles though...but SOME people)

As far as women's community service is concerned I mean it should be conducted during their jail time (and after) with legal supervision. I definitely don't mean they should be doing community service around women with no supervision and living at home.

I can totally see where you're coming from...I really can. And in a perfect world the views/suggestions expressed in that article might have been the answer.

Here's my issue though: Being a mother I cant help looking at this from a mom's perspective and I cant help thinking 'what if this was MY child that was victimized'....and honestly I want them locked up like the animals they are. ALL OF THEM.

I wonder how those boys and anyone else who said the victims were asking for it would feel/react if that happened to their sister or mother.

I was SHOCKED to not see his name mentioned anywhere. I don't know if he physically did anything, but he was involved, was one of the most vocal, and I thought he distributed videos and photos.

Isn't he the son of someone important though?

I *believe* that thought came up at some point and they or one of the boys said "I still wouldn't care"

Just goes to show how royally fuccked up they are. Their parents are the reason we should consider monitoring who can and cannot procreate!

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I've seen so much victim blaming and public shaming. I don't pity those boys at all. It wasn't just ONE bad decision. The text messages sent after the event show that this was not a momentary bad decision...this was a sense of entitlement and lack of respect for women developed over a length of time.

I've seen people question why she got so drunk or where were her parents and all I can say to those people is I pray they open their eyes soon. Because if they raise children with that naive attitude they will come to a day of rude awakening and I pray they never go through it in the way the steubenville victims parents had to.

People ask what she was doing out so late. But they fail to realize this could have happened at any hour of the day. My mom was a FTWM and when she called to say "i'll be home late I'm getting a haircut after work" that meant PARTY TIME! when she went to a friends house and left the house at 8 thinking that meant her teengagers would go to sleep...HAHAHAHA PARTY TIME! when she let me spend weekends with my dad...PARTY TIME! And the one time I complained and complained that I didn't want to go on her camping trip and she finally conceded and let me have a sleepover at my best friends house...MAJOR PARTY TIME. kids will be kids and when they want to do something they usually find a way. Whether it's climbing out a window while their parents are asleep or other.

Her being intoxicated should not be a free invitation for rape. We shouldn't be teaching our girls that they should just expect to be raped if they dress a certain way or have a drink or 5 or 10.

I saw a comment somewhere and it's so true. Men get passed out drunk and all they have to worry about is a few drawn penises on their face. Women get passed out drunk and have to worry about waking up naked and being raped.
