Help with table food feeding
DS is 1 now and I have been trying to give him some table food here and there. He gives me an incredible hard time and rejects pretty much everything I try to give him.
(cheese, puffs, mashed potatoes with meat are a few things I've tried)
I started him on stage 3 food about a month ago and only now he is starting to get used to it. (eating mostly without gagging) Is this normal? Should be be eating table foods by now? Should I keep trying to feed hom table foods? Should I give it a few weeks? What are your experiences? TIA!

I started giving DS table foods around 8 or 9 months. By 10 months, he started rejecting pureed foods. He was completely off pureed food around 10.5 months. I'd offer him table food on a more consistent basis. What does he like as purees? Try offering those things as small cut up pieces. By 1, they should be able to eat small pieces of most things.

IMO, stage 3s are nasty and I would skip them.
I would give him table food and just break everything up super tiny and see what he likes. Make grilled cheese and cut it into tiny squares, chicken nuggets, cottage cheese, etc.

I had the opposite problem, my DS hated baby food! At 9 months we started table food, and while he's a very picky eater, he at least eats something! My Dr said to start with pieces the size of your DS's pinky nail!

I would not recommend Stage 3 foods. I never gave them to Abby. They present 2 different textures at once and are often confusing to the kids. Its like they dont know what to do with the food in their mouths. I would use small bits of solids and give any puree separately.

I had been making all of sasha's food-- and what I spoon fed her was chunky. The last few days I have been giving her mainly things she can pick up and eat herself, but the only thing she'll absolutely finish is cheese.
So, I think I might have to make some more food-- I ran out and figured it was a good time to get her 100% feeding herself, but I think it's too much at once.
I have given her:
Whole Wheat Pasta, Peas, Chick Peas
WW Pasta, Steamed Carrots, Kidney Beans
Veggie Burgers, Cut up apple
Grilled Cheese, Peas, Kidney BEans
What I normally make and spoon feed her are combinations of a bean, brown rice or quinoa and veggies and cheese (ricotta for texture and shaved peccorrino for flavor).

yes I can see the texture being ambiguous. But he will not eat anything thats bulky! He throws all puffs on the floor, he shuts his mouth if I try and give him a piece of cheese. Its so frustrating! I feel like its almost turning him off to food. Stage 3 was the only solution I could think of. I also make my own food in the magic bullet so I've tried and make them more coarse. But he resists as soon as try and give him any table food :(

He'll eat anything you give him if its pureed. He's never been picky about pureed foods. I've given him broccolli, beets, cauliflower, the nastiest vegetables and he'll eat it. The only thing he's made a face at was peas. The minute anything chunky enters his mouth he gags. I feel so bad!

I would definitely try giving thicker things-- the foods I give her are like risotto texture. I think that helps prepare them to mash and chew. She hasn't really had a problem with the transition-- I just think she's not getting enough food when she's solely responsible for putting it in her mouth!

I tried giving him mashed potatoes with chopped meat for lunch today and he went balistic!! Gaged the whole time, cried, pushed the food away, was so ******. I felt horrible I put it in the magic bullet with some purred sweet potatoes and he ate the whole damn thing!!!
I'm screwed right?

If he's eating the stage 3 foods without gagging, then keep giving them to him for awhile longer. Perhaps try thickening it up with something else once in awhile.

Have you tried letting him feed himself instead of spoon feeding? Let him just stick his hands in the mashed potatoes and see what he does.
Or maybe piece of bread? M&J have loved bread since they started eating table foods.

I could have wrote this entire post! I'm going through the same thing right now with my 11 month DS... It's beyond frustrating because he refuses all table food and throws up if I manage to get any in, even the smallest thing like pastina.... Dr's just told me to keep trying it.. I know how frustrating it is!!

No I haven't let him feed himself, he hasn't atempted yet, but I will admit, maybe I'm a bit anal about the potential mess it could cause...lmaoooo
I know I have to bite the bullet and let him dig in and see what happens. Knowing him though I think he'll get skeeved...
I will try it tomorrow and let you know how it goes...

First, if he's eating Stage 3 for now, then maybe he's just not ready yet for chunkier food. (Since he's apparently giving quite the fight!) Secondly, though, I would call your pediatrician. They might have suggestions or even just tell you this happens with some kids and to try in a month or something. Who knows. They also might want to look into him possibility having sensory issues where certain "feels" just bother him. (In which case I don't know what they do but I know there are strategies out there.)

DS was the same way. He would literally throw up. You have to let him eat foods that he can pick up and eventually he will get it.

I think the key is to give him food that he really enjoys and is tasty in the beginning.
At first, DS liked french fries only it seemed. Then he would eat chicken nuggets from mcdonalds.
It was so stressful trying to feed him as he would keep his mouth shut at all times. Now he eats 75% of everything we eat at the table. We just cut everything up into tiny pieces and feed him by hand. (he hates spoons and forks)
DS gags and spits stuff out when he doesn't like it or it is hard to chew for him.
ETA: DS rejected stage 2 and 3 baby food altogether. he only wanted table food.

I think he's not ready for table foods. This is my fault I guess for not introducing them until about 1 month ago. I'm sure these things take time. I guess I just have to continue being diligent and offering more and more chunkier table foods everyday.

You really should be letting him try to feed himself at this point. Don't make it a power struggle, just put the pieces of food in front of him and let him explore. Give him a spoon to hold while your feeding him.

With DS by the time he was 9 months old he only wanted table food. Now with DD at 10 months old she does not want any baby food for dinner so I give her what we eat. I started giving her table food about a month ago but she really did not want anything to do with it and just now she has decided on her own that it is time for table food.
