DD just turned 3, so next September she would start preschool at the public school when she is 4. at what point do I have to sign her up for it or request information and how exactly do I go about doing that?

Are you in the city or li? I would call my local elementary school or go on the district webpage and look it up

Re: help me with public preschool
The one I enrolled DD in is a private church daycare. I don't feel like a public preschool would be all this different though. I say, just call them and ask for their information. Sometimes they snail mail it, sometimes it's e-mailed, sometimes you have to go pick it up. When I originally started thinking about putting DD in preschool, I was told that they do fill up fast so I needed to get her name on registration within the month of March (for September enrollment). They just e-mailed me all the info. I couldn't make the decision by that point though. I thought I'd just keep her home until kindergarten (since I'm a preschool teacher, myself, and was already teaching her all she'd need to know). Then this summer I found out that kindergarten is all day and I thought the transition would be way too hard without at least doing something part time in between. So I contacted them in July (for September enrollment) and being that it was only 2 months before Fall session begins, their spaces were limited. In fact, they only had one slot left and said I could come down for all the paperwork and to look around. I did that day.
So just plan on needing to know within those 6 months before sessions begin. I would start calling places at least by February or March.

Re: help me with public preschool
You will gets tons and I means tons of communication in the spring! They automatically reach out to parents whose kids birthyear belongs in that prek. My twins were born in 2011. The beginning of this year I got mailings, pamphlets, letters, even 2 automated phone calls to my house reminding me of universal prek and that my child is eligible based on their birth year.
This is in Queens, not LI.

My DD was born in 2011 and I have received nothing(in queens)....same for my older dd when I was registering her for K(this was before universal pre-k existed)...if I didn't look online in January I would have missed the pre-registration happening in February for the K.

Really? That's so strange. Ok, well that's NYC for you. LOL.
3 of my friends all experienced what I did do. I have no idea how they even got our information. I'm assuming from the hospital? But I delivered in Nassau County.

Re: help me with public preschool
I would\ld call your child's future school & ask them when registration is. I had the same experience with our queens SD. Non stop calls & letters reminding me to register my oldest for prek. My younger son will be ready for prek next year but in a nassau SD so I wonder what they will do.

If you call central registration for your district they will tell you when to call to make an appointment. I think they have it marked on our school district calendar too, so check there. I'm pretty sure for us it's in March. HTH!
