Help-Getting rid of bottle

Dd turned 1 two weeks ago so it's time for the bottle to go. She isn't fully on milk yet (just found out she is over her milk allergy) so she is getting 2 oz milk to 7 oz formula in 3 bottles per day. She will drink water from her straw cup without an issue, but if I put her "milk" in it, she refuses. I bought her a new color of her straw cup thinking that will be her milk cup, but so far no good. Any ideas?

Re: Help-Getting rid of bottle

I just waited until she was ready.
Around 15 months she was.
At 12 months it was a NIGHTMARE
She was like a crack addict going through withdrawals.
Screaming, arching her back, begging for it.

These ages they tell you are arbitrary.

IMO I'd rather wait for her to be ready and save us all a lot of heartache.
I tried again around 15 months and she went to cups with no issue and not one peep.
And she suffered no ill effects from having the bottle for those 3 extra months!

Thank you for your reply. Funny thing is, she doesn't cry for it, she just hands the cup back to me. I have no problem with waiting, I just want to start exposing her to getting milk in her cup. Ideally I would like to have her off of it by the time ds arrives when she is 16.5 months.

Help-Getting rid of bottle

We did the same as Nell. I started by giving him milk in his lunch cup instead of offering him his water so that it would cut out his afternoon bottle. He drank that for a while then everntually I gave him a morning cup instead of a bottle at breakfast and the night bottle was the last to go. All told he was probably off bottles by 16 months.

I tried to switch from bottles to cup right after a year also and DS would NOT drink milk from a cup even though he drank water from it so I gave up. I waited til 15 months and switched it cold turkey just took all the bottles away and he was fine. First night he cried but next morning realized his 3rd molar broke through so not sure if it was the bottle or the teeth that made him cry. But I did like just going cold turkey no transitioning. I think that would of been worse for him.

I'm not a believer of getting them off the bottle as soon as they turn 1. Some kids are JUST NOT READY! I say give them time. They are still babies in my eyes. DS #1 was done by 18 months and DS #2 by 19 months. They are just fine! Their teeth are fine and nothing bad happened. Why stress a baby so young?

Agreed. Only thing is she isn't stressed. She has no attachment to the bottle at all, meaning she can take it or leave it. She has always been that way. My goal is just to get her to take milk from a cup as well abd eventually get rid of the bottle, but I would rather her get rid of the bottle before she develops an attachment to it. Of course, if she isn't drinking enough milk from a cup, I will not refuse her a bottle. Her nutrition is more important.

Re: Help-Getting rid of bottle

I started giving DS milk in a cup with straw and handles at lunch and he got used to that. I took his bottles away around 14 months and he was already used to the cup and was fine. Didn't even notice. Give her some time

Help-Getting rid of bottle

To all PP's that have transitioned to the bottle:

Did your LO's daily milk consumption go down after getting rid of all bottles?

I can't speak for anyone else, but my ped said it would and she said it is fine because she is getting calcium from other sources.
