Help! Fourth of July
My poor dog is terrified of loud noises, thunderstorms and fireworks...She really has an anxiety attack. I want to try to prevent this from happening. How do you cope with your dog on the Fourth of July?

Re: Help! Fourth of July
I take my dog out during daylight b'c the fireworks are mostly bad when it gets dark.
Then we come in, I put the tv really loud, and put the ac on. Put a lot of background noise on, and your pup isn't likely to hear it. It works for us. For me, the trick is to get her to do her business before dark and don't take her out again until the next am .

Unfortunately even with the tv blasting Bruno freaks out, so I just leave all the closet doors open so he can hide and come out when he feels safer.

Re: Help! Fourth of July
This is my dilema as well.. I had to bring her to my mothers last year. Her block is very quiet.. My neighbor had a war here last year.. Which is weird because she has dogs that are afraid also??? I guess she just deals with it... I asked if they were going to do the same thing this year and she said she dosen't think so.. But i am taking Loa to her boy friend Sammies house.. he is not afraid at all. i am praying he trains her for me.. Dogs are better than humans when it come to energy. I think she knows I am sad for her and she acts worse.. So I refuse to pick her up this year and comfort her because I believe I am reinforcing the fear and behavoir. As hard as it is going to be I am not doing it.

Do you have a basement - my SIL puts her dog in the basement (you can hardly hear anything down there) and she puts music on.

Re: Help! Fourth of July
My Shepherd would always freak out & pace the house & then hide in the bathtub. We would put on the bathroom fan to drown out the noise & it seemed to help her relax a little.

My other dog used to do this and we would just close the door alittle. Now my lil one now she isn't that bad she just barks if she hears fireworks but does not hide yet. So what we do is turn the TV up loud for her during these times and it works. We also play with her to keep her mind off the fireworks. She isnt bad with thunder which is surprising.
ETA: Now my cat is another story. I just let her hide. She hates it.

So far with all the fireworks in the neighborhood, Daisy has been attached to my hip curled in a ball, and I rub her when it gets loud and she nuzzles her head into me.
Poor dogs!

Re: Help! Fourth of July
Thanks for the ideas! I think I'm going to have to put the ac on high and put some music on and try to drown out the sound of the fireworks. I'm seriously thinking of calling the vet and asking about benedryl.
