help... 3 month old was SSTN and isn't now

DD was consistently STTN (8-10 hrs) since she was about 4 weeks. She is now 12 weeks and has been waking up every night the last week after like 5 hrs after I put her to bed. I think it's because she is hungry. I had been giving her the paci and she goes back down for maybe an hour and then we repeat again before I feed her. I dont want her to get in the habit of wanting an extra feeding but last night I gave in, I dont want her to be hungry. My mom suggested giving her some cereal with her last feeding to keep her fuller. She is a BF baby but we do give her a bottle every once in a while so I could put some in with that. Any advice? Should I start her on cereal?

She might go back to STTN shortly. DS does this every now and then.

I've been going through the same thing right now. DD was STTN consistently for a month straight and then this week has been waking at either 1:30 or 4:30 every night. I read an article on kellymom.com last night that said it's very common around 4 months with bf babies. It attributed it to their being more alert and distracted during daytime feedings. They need to make up the missed ounces and tend to do so at night when it's dark and quiet.
Personally, I wouldn't start cereal this early, especially without consulting your doctor.

ETA-Here's the article

uhm....feed your baby. your child will go through growth spurts at 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and of course this can vary but to fuel this growth, they need to eat and may even have an insatiable hunger.

PLEASE feed your baby. It isn't until 6 months that most can sleep through the night (medically speaking) due to not being hungry.

ALSO, breastmilk digests MUCH quicker than formula so your baby will need to be fed more often...please do some research online about this, there's information everwhere. I think you would find to NOT feed cereal at this age, this was popular in our parents generation but not so much now.

at 3 months, she might still need that night feeding! it could be temporary (perhaps a growth spurt) but if she needs it, feed her!

Since you are BF, you don't know for sure how much she is getting at each feeding. I would just feed her if she's waking up in the middle of the night.

Re: help... 3 month old was SSTN and isn't now

I would ask the doctor before you start her on any cereal. And if you decide to give her cereal in her bottle, it should NOT be used a sleep aid to make her sleep longer. We started our DD on cereal in her bottle at 14 weeks, but it was because of her spitting up too frequently and our doctor recommended it. Though it does make her sleep a little longer, when she wakes up we feed her immediately. Up until 6 months old, they should be fed every 4 hours, so if your DD is waking in the middle of the night, its either because she needs to be changed and or is hungry.

How many ounces are you currently feeding her?

I agree feed her at night and no cereal, way too early and not proven to have them sleep any longer.

Growth spurt - your child is just hungry and needs a regular bottle. It's a common sleep regression because of a growth spurt. I would just give her the bottle and she will eventually finish her spurt and go back to her normal sleeping pattern. You shouldn't have to give her cereal just yet, she is probably just really hungry.

Thanks for the advice. I will just stick with the extra night feeding. She isn't waking up screaming or anything but she definitely stirs and gets a little fussy so I figured it's because she is hungry. I assumed it is a growth spurt so hopefully once she is done with it she will go back to STTN.

DD went through the so-called '4 month sleep regression' too. She was STTN and then all of a sudden would wake up 2x, then 5x, it got up to 11-12x in a night.

We took the paci away and did CIO around 5.5 months and then she went back to STTN.

I'm glad you said this. 12 weeks is way too early for any kind of sleep training. If she wakes up hungry, feed her!

My DD slept for about 9 hours, then woke up for a feeding, then slept again for 4 hours or so, at 9 AM, until she was 6 months old. Then we did CIO with her and it took her 2 nights to stop crying for that middle-of-the-night feeding. But since she was sleeping straight through, she'd wake up for the day after 11 hours of sleep. At 6 AM. Chat Icon So there are pluses and minuses to that middle-of-the-night feeding. Chat Icon
