HELP! - Sore Nipples

I am EBF and we have been doing well up until a couple of days ago. DD has a good latch and all but there is something going on with one side. It looks like there is a blister on it. It is terribly painful for her to feed on that side. What can I do? I want to continue breastfeeding but I can't be in this kind of pain for much longer Chat Icon

TIA!

Re: HELP! - Sore Nipples

I would contact a lactation consultant, or someone from LLL (they have a help form on their website and a volunteer will get back to you, or you can call them). A blister sounds like more than the usual first few weeks soreness. You may need treatment for it, although it is also common! If it is too painful to nurse on that side, you could pump that side and only nurse on the other for the time being. Feel better! Chat Icon

Oooooh, SO painful!!! I used a sterilized needle to "treat" it. Not fun, but it worked!!!

Re: HELP! - Sore Nipples

I would give the lanolin a try or you can even try to hand express some breast milk and put it on. Ive heard it helps also.

Google "milk blister", that's what it sounds like. Kellymom and LLL websites have good info. I've had them a few times, ouch! Slather on some lansinoh cream and use warm compresses. Try to exfoliate area with a washcloth. If you can bear through the pain, use a warm compress and then nurse. If not, compress then pump. Nursing will clear out the blister/blockage faster. For me, the initial latch and first few seconds of nursing was the worst and I was able to tolerate it once DS got going. It usually gets better within a few days.
