Re: Heimlich Maneuver
If you take an American red course first aid class it should be covered including CPR.

Heimlich Maneuver
I never took a class in this, but recently had to actually do it! My 16 year old started choking on a piece of steak. She tried to take a sip of water and it all came back up. The steak was literally lodged and she couldn't talk or breathe. It was terrifying. I guess I did it right because it came up when I gave her the Heimlich.
Now, all I can think about is what if she were home alone? I showed her how to use a chair to di it to herself, but also told her she is no longer allowed to eat without someone present (kidding). Scary!

Re: Heimlich Maneuver
Basic cpr class has about 10 minutes on the Heimlich maneuver for all age groups. I have done cpr classes at hospitals and local cpr companies.

Scary right! I had to do it on my 16 year old son a couple of months ago when he was eating chicken. I panicked, like literally panicked. I was smacking his back, and then doing the heimlich. I ultimately had to call 911 and an ambulance transported him to the hospital.
I did learn that if they can talk and breathe, even if something is stuck, to NOT do the heimlich manuever since it can do more damage. When the ambulance came, they didn't do anything to him because he was able to breathe, even though there was something still lodged. Fortunately he coughed it all up while we were at the hospital. Choking is VERY scary! He choked a couple of years ago on a hot dog also! I don't like him to eat without someone right there now! Makes me so nervous!

Beyond scary!!!! I read a similar story in FB, it happened to a mom and her 2 yrs old. Luckily it had a happy ending!
I'm one of those ppl that freeze when panicked and I feel that if I'm prepared on what to do, I'd react quicker.
