I've been trained but thankfully never had to use it. I'm worried that if I need to, I might not know what to do. I'm going to see if I can get trained again.

Re: Do you know how to do the Heimlich Maneuver?
Everything is ok now. DH choked on pot roast. We didn't even realize he was choking at first. We thought he was laughing becuase my MIL was telling a funny story. Fast forward....he's choking. I was crying and his mother saved him. Very scary. We both need to know how to do it, I feel.

glad he's okay!!!
i have to keep my certification current, but i think it matters more to actually be able to DO IT in the situation than to just have something that says you know how to. I always worry that i'll freeze or something when i need to act.

Re: Do you know how to do the Heimlich Maneuver?
So glad to hear your DH is ok!
I learned how to do it when I got CPR certified, but I've never had to use it - I worry I'll panic and not do it right if I ever really had to.

Re: Do you know how to do the Heimlich Maneuver?
Its a great thing to learn, just keep in mind that the procedure is different for small children, which is why its a good idea to take child and infant CPR if you have kids.

Re: Do you know how to do the Heimlich Maneuver?
EVERYONE should be trained by a professional. Especially parents.
My parents watched their best friend die because no one knew CPR. The guilt they all carried around is immense. You don't want that.
One of the children I trained in CPR saved her mother's life as a result.
There is no reason a strong child cannot learn. They could save YOUR life!
It's a few hour out of your life. Surely, everyone can spare a few hours to learn life-saving techniques. There really is no excuse not to learn.
Employers will sponsor a class too, as other people here have said. I think it's a great idea.

Re: Do you know how to do the Heimlich Maneuver?
SO SCARY! I'm so glad everything is okay. Definitely go get certified! I was certified in CPR (including the heimlich, etc.) I believe my certification recently expired, though. It's an excellent thing to know. I had to use my knowledge of CPR once.

Re: Do you know how to do the Heimlich Maneuver?
Thanks everyone.
I panicked. Thankfully my MIL knows CPR and heimlich. I could not imagine what I would have done if it was just the two of us. Something for me to think about...its a very scary situation. I signed us both up for a CPR class.

I agree, everyone should know CPR, however, your parents shouldn't feel guilty... The chances that someone's life will be saved by CPR is very small, unfortunately.
If you can, you should get trained in how to use an AED. There are CPR classes that offer AED training. The AED will save someone's life much better than CPR alone, especially if it is a witnessed arrest. Most public places like supermarkets, airports, libraries, etc. should have an AED in the building.
Also if you do not know CPR, and call 911, the dispatcher will talk you through it.
