Heading back to work.. or not?

So, with just over 2 weeks left in my "maternity leave" (the time between when I gave birth and am cleared to return to work by my doctor), the doctor I work for decides he doesn't want me coming back full-time, but wants me 3 days per week. Great, this is what I would LOVE, HOWEVER, I set up and arranged for daycare at Tutor time for full-time. I did NO research on part-time sitters/daycare. The amount that I would save by only putting DS in daycare 3 days a week instead of 5 days ($200) is peanuts compared to how much I'd be losing out on with my salary. It's not worth the money, I'd be better off if the doctor fired me and I took unemployment! I'm mostly pissed because this leaves me with NO real decision time, especially since it took me 3 months to decide on Tutor Time as daycare. I'm supposed to go back on the 12th, and as of now I have no idea what is going on.

My IDEAL would be to stay home with DS but I have some minor student loans that I still have to pay off, and I would love a little pocket change for myself. Our household bills are taken care of DH's salary and have been for a few years now. I know some women who are SAHMs have one or two other children that they sit for. How did you go about setting that up? That would be my preference at this point.

I think watching kids to supplement your income is a great idea, especially if at this point it is not worth it to work since your salary is going to go to the cost of daycare. I know at one point I needed a SAHM to watch my DS because my DH works different hours each week so a traditional daycare did not work for us. I found her on here but if you are on Facebook, I know there is a group called "Childcare on Long Island" that you may want to try posting on to see if there is anyone looking for SAHM's to watch their LO's.

Why not post on sitter city,care.com and Craigslist. Also, see if there are any moms groups for your town on Facebook and post there. I've also seen ads on community bulletin boards. Good luck !

Heading back to work.. or not?

Thank you! I am definitely going to look into all these suggestions! I'm just so frustrated that he leaves things hanging and is so passive aggressive. I figured if he would only pay me a little more than what my basic breakdown of my salary would be from 5 days per week to 3 days per week, just so that I could take home an additional $100 per biweekly paycheck, it would be worth it... but we shall see what he has to say. If he comes back saying OK to full-time (which I'm really hoping he says NO to) I'll do full-time for a few months until my loans are paid off and I can save a little more $$ then quit and explore these options more fully. Otherwise, if he says no, which I'm crossing my fingers for, I get more time with my son, which I am really loving the idea of.

I would try a local fb moms group. I've seen plenty of responses to those types of posts in my town. It stinks that you have almost no notice to a big change like this but hopefully it works out in your favor!

I watched kids in my house when my DD was younger. Both of the moms found me on Care.com and everything worked out great! Chat Icon

I could be wrong, but I thought that your employer HAD to take you back in a similar position of that in which you left. I didn't think he would be allowed to just say he only needs you part time now.

If you don't mind, then obviously disregard, but I just thought that was the law.

I think the job needs to employ 30+ employees for them to be obligated to follow FMLA guidelines.

If you can a find an in home daycare they generally charge around $50/day. That might be cheaper, you can work part time to pay off the student debt and then be a Sahm Chat Icon

I watched 1 girl for 3 hrs a day 3 days week when my twins were 1yr old & they were ALWAYS SICK!!!!!! With an infant I don't recommend watching unless you are really sure. I have stopped watching children for a bit.

Its either I watch or daycare, either way I'm sure he'll end up sick. I'm also looking into telecommuting jobs with the insurance companies and other health care related companies (billing, transcription).

Can they arrange for you to work from home for those 2 days? That way you don't lose the $ but you still get to be home w the baby.

That's something I'm going to ask about.
