he won't stop barking!!!
i live in an apartment complex and my downstairs neighbor's dog (i think it's some kind of terrier mix) WON'T SHUT UP
is there anything i can do/buy to stop this??
they know that their dog has a barking problem b/c when they are home, they always yell at him to be quiet, but they leave the windows open during the day (yes in winter ) and i can hear him NON STOP. (they leave early in the morning and get back later than i do).
any advice is appreciated!!!

Re: he won't stop barking!!!
I might place an anonymous note asking them to keep their windows shut (nicely). Or if you prefer and feel tehy will care, ask directly.
See if that helps first?
Tough situation...

Re: he won't stop barking!!!
I'd go with the nicely worded note first to see if that helps.
In the meantime, find out if there are any official rules about dogs/noise for the building.
If it continues, I'd talk to them, again politely, and take a cue from their demeanor. Mention the rules if you know them.
Third strike is contacting the super/landlord whoever can do something about it.
Just make sure they don't know what apartment you're in or what your car looks like.

Re: he won't stop barking!!!
If if you live in NYC you can call 311 and file a noise complaint. Most counties have "nuciance" laws. Also, I would suggest to them to surrender the dog to a no kill shelter where it can find the home it truly deserves. Telling the dog to shut up is abusive.

i can't do that - we live in a garden apartment, and they are our downstairs neighbor. the building is only two floors.
i have spoken with them before, not about anything specific, just some "hi, how are you" stuff. it's two women, and they seem like nice enough people but the truth is THEY are loud as well - sounds like they are walking on the ceiling during the day! they also seem to have VERY hot tempers (lots of door slamming).
i think i am going to ask a local PD what i can do, if anything... i don't want any trouble, and it's almost impossible to write something anonymously!

Honestly, if it was me, I would hope you would talk to me or write the note at least once before going to the police - although you say they "know" there dog is barking alot - they may not realize to the extent that you hear it......

Re: he won't stop barking!!!
If you think the dog is being abused (you said the tell the dog to shut up) then you should file an anonymous complaint with your local spca..if it is Nassau County it is Nassau County SPCA, Suffolk is Suffolk County SPCA, 5 boroughs it is the ASPCA. The ASPCA has no affliation with SPCA's.
