having only 1 car..
we have 2 cars now...a 2000 saturn that is pretty beat up and an 05 camry.
we need something bigger....we are considering trading both in for a bigger vehicle since the saturn has no payments.
Why you ask?
b/c dh is getting transferred to a store 15 min from home and i work 15 min from home too....we could technically work it. we did it when we first moved to GA so i know we can handle it

I hope it works out for you. I know that our family couldn't do it on one car alone. Good luck!

Re: having only 1 car..
My SIL and BIL did this for awhile. He was stationed in Michigan, she just had the baby and wasn't working, so they decided to sell one car. It worked, but it was a headache. If she needed the car, she would wake up at 6:30, get the baby up and drop him off. To pick him up at night, she would make dinner, hurry up and pack the baby back into the car and go get him.
You won't have the problem of snow, but for her, it was hard to scrape the windows and shovel with the baby when they would pick him up.
If he took the car that day, she was stranded.
Good luck!

I would think long & hard about it - especially with pediatrician appts, etc. My BIL & SIL share a car just on their commute since they both work in the same town but live in another. No running out on lunch hours, doctors appts, etc.

We just have 1 car, but I take the train to work.
Do you work different schedules? Would you be ok home with the baby & not the car?

Re: having only 1 car..
I think regardless of whether you can survive on one car or not... you should think about the following point.
First off... are you really in THAT big of a need for a larger car? If I remember correctly... you just bought this Camry because you wanted something larger at the time for a baby.
A 4 door car is fine for having a kid. Even for having two kids. If you sell this car now... you are most likely upside down on the loan since its such a new car... it would be a horrible financial move.

Re: having only 1 car..
we only have one car. we are saving for a 2nd right now. at this point, it is OK b/c 5 days a week I commute into the city. it does force both of us to basically be together all weekend though. once we have a kid, we are getting car #2

Djpill: the reason being we would drive to NY to see family and if we bring the dogs....need somrplace to put the furballs.
we'd trade in both cars to take car of being upside down
and I've been stuck at home before and i'm fine with it....
we are just talking about right now...just seeing if others did the same thing

Re: having only 1 car..
1 car is hard depending on your situations....
I think something can always come up and makes it very hard for 1 person to get to. Dr appts, emergency's, etc... its very limited. Prehaps baby isn't feeling well or something... imagine anything and everything...
2nd car can be beat up but as long as it can drive from point A to point B, its a functional car. Are you even gonna get a good amount of money after trading it in?

Then sell the Saturn and buy a used larger car. You owe nothing on the Saturn. That is the car you want to sell.
If you sell the Camry now... you will be upside down and thats a horrid financial move. Selling the saturn to offset this doesn't make the decision any wiser.
Living with just one car anywhere outside of NYC is really taking a risk IMO.

Re: having only 1 car..
Do you have a loan on the Camry or a lease? We lease a Camry and were thinking about trading it in for a bigger car so that if people come in from out of town we don't need 2 cars to go everywhere since we'll have 2 carseats now. Turning in the lease early incurs some fines, but if we got another Toyota they are willing to work with us to mitigate most of them.
The only reason I'd say think about it is that earlier this winter my brother's car was hit by a truck while he was in a store and almost totalled. It was in the shop for a month so he borrowed our station car and I took DH to and from the train. He catches a 6:15am train and gets home between 9:30 and 10pm. It was hard to keep waking Sarah up, getting her dressed in her winter coat, hat, etc. to bring her with us up to the station. It really threw off her sleep schedule for a while. Otherwise, I know it's doable, we did it for a while before Sarah came along, and my dad and his wife did it living down by you for a while when one of her kids totalled their car.
Good luck!

We have a loan on it. We did the one car thing when we first moved to GA and the commute between jobs was ALOT more than what it COULD be in a few weeks. Plus, if DH drops me off, then my boss/friend can drive me home. BUT...DH mostly opens the store, which means I drop him off, go to work/home, leave work to go pick him up at 6pm or earlier. I could always stay home the days he closes.
I USED to be stuck at the apt. EVERY weekend (I'd go food shopping early AM before he left for work).
I think it COULD work....
