Have to give up BF
After finding out today that DS has a milk protein allergy I had to switch to allergy formula which thankfully my insurance covers. Based on his behavior I thought it was colic like my older DS, but the last two days he dropped feedings and length of nursing and his poop changed dramatically...super smelly green and stringy with mucus. I thought I was being so careful with my diet but turns out dairy is hidden in so many things I had no idea of. I'm down and out about not nursing anymore but know I need to do whatever is best for him. At least I got through 5 weeks but my plan was 6 months. I was able to nurse my older DS for 4 months until I returned to work. On a positive...I'm hoping this change will stop his incessant screaming, spitting up, and explosive BMs.

I dealt with that too. I gave up all hidden dairy and his behavior improved totally. Every now and again I eat hidden butter and his diaper turns green. I tried allenium(sp?) and he still had a bad smelling diaper. Did the dr say you had to give up bfing. After 3 months of eating zero dairy that I know of, I got used to it. I eat a lot of ices and sorbet instead of fro yo. Good luck!!!

I had to do it too... DS was so sick.... IMO, it was worth it for him.. I couldn't cut out everything with dairy because I have issues with a lot of foods.. I was down to eating chicken and water at one point and I stopped producing enough milk... It is hard at first but then you will see a big difference in your baby and think it is all worth it..

Are you certain he's not just getting too much foremilk? I had a huge oversupply issue with my DS and experienced exactly what you describe.

I had to stop at 7 weeks also. I was making myself crazy, which in turn made him crazy on top of being gassy and cranky. Best thing I could have done for both of us!!

I don't think it was an oversupply issue...I was never engorged and he pretty consistently fed about every two hours. I let him eat until he stopped before switching breasts 99% of the time. My right breast produced far less milk than my left so I often let him feed more on the right to help build more of a supply there. If I pumped my foremilk only came for a short amount of time and followed by the fatty milk. The suggestions I saw for having a foremilk issue and correcting it I seemed to be doing already but things were getting worse and worse. If you have more info you can share from your experience I would certainly welcome it.

I agree! My DD showed all the signs of a dairy allergy. I gave up all dairy, including hidden dair,y and within a week, she was a completely different baby. It took a little longer for the muscus-y green stool to clear up, since it takes a few weeks for all dairy to leave your system, but it worked. She even seemed to outgrow it, I introduced dairy back into my diet when she was about 4mo old and she's been fine. After almost 9mo of nursing, we are still going strong!! Good luck, whatever you choose!

I am so sorry, I too know the feeling of being forced to give up nursing before you wanted to. You did your absolute best and the circumstances are out of your control. At the end of the day healthy baby is what we all pray for, and I hope that he will outgrow his allergies. Hugs for you mommy for being wonderful!

My DS had a milk protein allergy, 16 poops with bloody mucous a day, it was horrible seeing blood in his diaper for months (Pediatrician didn't know what was wrong with him for 4 months!-switched ped. because they didn't seem to know all that much about milk protein allergies). It took the GI specialist to tell us that it was the milk protein allergy and that the only way for me to keep BFing was to only eat chicken and water. (which she suggested I don't do!) It really stinks, because I wanted to BF for a year, but it was sooo severe that my son's health was far more important than me sticking with BF. You tried your best, that's all you can do!

It might be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, even if you don't have an oversupply. If you really want to continue bfing I would recommend talking to a LC or reading up about a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. I had this with my DD and once the situation improved, she was MUCH better. My LC had me nurse of the same side for more than one feeding, decreasing the amount of foremilk the baby was getting (High in lactose and causing the issue). fm if you want more info. Good luck!
