Have GD, need advice

So with 7 weeks left I just found out that I have GD.
For those that have/had it what did you have to do?

You'll be fine! You just need to adjust your diet and test your sugar a few times a day. Limiting carbs, eliminating sugar for the most part. It really isn't that bad, aside from having to watch what you eat! Did you make an appt with a dietician?

Most women don't need insulin. I did need glyburide (just a pill!) to help with my fasting numbers.

Re: Have GD, need advice

You meet with a nutritionist and possibly a dr at an endocrinologist office (or where your OB recommends you go).

You test your blood 4 times a day (wake-up, 1 hour after breakfast, lunch & dinner). You also test your ketones with FMU (not all Drs require this).

Each nutritionist is different, mine limits my carb intake to:
Breakfast: 15g
AM snack: 15g
Lunch: 45g
Afternoon snack: 15g
Dinner: 60g
PM Snack: 30g

My blood sugar 1 hour after each meal has to be under 120.

I've lost about 15lbs now since I was diagnosed and started the new "diet". It will plateau at some point.

If you have consecutive numbers out of range and your Dr is concerned, they may start you on insulin. I am on it right now for lunch and dinner only. It's a pain to stick my thigh before a meal, but you do what needs to be done to keep both you and the baby healthy.

It's manageable. I had it with my 1st pregnancy and now with my 2nd. I keep thinking of it this way - I don't want a 10+lb baby as I want to keep both our bodies in check to deliver vaginally. My DC #1 was 7lbs 7oz, so it all works out.

With my DD I had to change my diet (A LOT) and I ended up on insulin 4X/day. At first I was upset about the insulin but it really wasn't that big of a deal and it made managing the GD so much easier.

With my DS it was mostly enough to change my diet, I only needed insulin at night to help my morning numbers.

Once you get the hang of eating differently it's not too bad. Different foods and combinations of foods will work differently for each person. Also, foods that may have been okay one week might spike your sugar the next week. The GD is always changing and you just have to learn to adjust your food and/or insulin to meet your needs from day to day.

You'll manage, it's only 7 weeks!! Chat Icon Chat Icon The nice thing, as soon as my kids were born the GD was gone. Hang in there.

Thanks girls, I'm terrified of needles!!! I just called to make appt and couldn't get one til next Saturday and was lucky to get that one. But nothing with monitor til the week after. Then I'll make the other appt to see about my sugars another week after that.
I just pray it is all good and no insulin.
As far as big babies I already mad 2 of them and will be having a cs but I pray he is healthy!!

For breakfast I've been having eggs and cheese with a slice of whole wheat toast and a small glass of milk. I've swapped out the eggs for cottage cheese.

For snacks, I either have a nature valley protein bar, 100 calorie Greek yogurt, some cheese and wheat crackers with a small fruit portion. Sugar free ice pops.

Lunch I've been having a lot of low carb wraps. Either grilled chicken with cheese and lettuce and hummus or some cold cuts.

Dinner is any protein with veggies and a small carb portion.

Yes, but certain vegetables do carry carbs - like carrots, peas, etc. I typically have a regular serving size of vegetables with dinner and add a side salad as well. A carb-free veggie is green beans and romaine lettuce.

I was thinking also to eat some raw ones with a snack? Yay or Nay?

I'd say yay, just try not to go too crazy with it.
