Has anyone not had an HSG?

It wasn't recommended to me when I first went to my RE, as I had just had my second miscarriage. This was five months ago and haven't gotten pregnant since. It was mentioned last month briefly, given I have not gotten pregnant since, although I am planning on moving to IVF soon, maybe giving it one more month. I guess now where I am at, I don't see the point. Does everyone get one? Should I have had one?

Re: Has anyone not had an HSG?

It wasn't recommended to me either. After 3 months he said we might try it.

Since I had a m/c, we know that at least one tube it good. He didn't say that part, that is my guess. He said tubes just don't become blocked there are risk factors for it. I don't have any of the risk factors.

He also said that there are risks associated with it, including infection and it is very painful. So he doesn't want to put me through it until he feels he needs to.

Re: Has anyone not had an HSG?

According to my current RE, everyone should have one.
Even if you are doing IVF, they need to make sure that fluid can drain out of your uterus and it helps them to make sure the uterus is not oddly shaped. There is fluid injected with the embryos during transfer and if you have a t-shaped uterus or some other issue, it helps them to decide wether A) You are able to carry a pregnancy at all and B) What to do during transfer regarding placement of embryos.

It is even more important if you haven't moved to IVF and are still doing IUI.

There are some bonuses too...if you are doing IUI cycles, most people get PG within two cycles of an HSG - apparently the dye makes the tubes more slippery and it's easier for the sperm to get to the egg. Also, it's not THAT painful and it lasts only a few moments. The risk of infection is addressed with antibiotics and at that rate there is a risk of infection with an IUI...anything going through the cervix creates that risk.

Thanks so much for your reply. I am thinking the same, at least one tube is good.

Re: Has anyone not had an HSG?

I agree with everything Gerty said. And HSG IMO is one of the first tests you should have.

What happens if you do only have one tube open and you ovulate from the side that's blocked. All the IUI's and BDing in the world that cycle won't help. It's a very quick test that absolutely should be done.

ETA: I'm have zero tolerance for pain, although it's gotten better with all this IF stuff, but my HSG was not painful at all. Just uncomfortable for a couple of minutes.

Thanks for all this info. I did have two water sonos and had a hysteroscopy. Not sure if that helps determine the shape of uterus.

This is what is bothering me. I am wondering if it should have been done from the beginning.

Re: Has anyone not had an HSG?

I just want to add that some RE's don't recommend HSG's and for the life of me I don't understand it.
We did 10 IUI cycles and whenever I asked about an HSG, I was told I didn't need it - I was a classic case of PCOS.
Imagine my anger when I did have the HSG with a new RE - going straight to IVF - and we discovered one blocked tube and one very swollen, misshapen tube. Even my RE was sort of horrified and said that even if the egg got fertilized, it would never make a viable pregnancy. Not saying this is the case, but it's a very easy and informative test - why they don't do it is beyond me.

I totally agree with you and remember your story. I guess I thought I was okay, given the two miscarriages, but am thinking now I should have had this done.

I agree w/ everything Gerty said. I have not had one yet, but my dr said it's always good to know what's going on- so he's sending me for one once i start BCPs. We're doing IVF as well. GL!

Re: Has anyone not had an HSG?

I had one and I'll tell you that you can get the wrong results from it too. It said I had blocked right tube and scar tissue in my uterus. Both of which was not the case (then I had lapo/hysto surgery for no reason). So, if your RE is not recommending it, it may be that they don't really rely on it too much. You can get the same results from the water sonogram and its less painful. Actually for me the whole experience was horrible. I did get pg right after the test (from the right ovary no less) and had m/c at 5w4d. But, it was the only time I did get pg, they say it was a chromosomal issue. So, if you do have to go, maybe you will get lucky afterwards. Many women do. Probably the only good thing about it. Good luck.

I just wanted to add that I wouldn't count on this theory. I got pregnant in 2002, carried full term and gave birth in 2003 with no problems.

In January of 2005 I had an ectopic in my left tube - I had no risk factors. The pg was removed lap surgery and tube saved. I was told to assume that all was o.k. since during the lap they looked at the tubes and they looked o.k. May of 2005 I had an ectopic in the right tube which ruptured. I almost died before I got into surgery from internal bleeding. That tube was removed.

In January of 2007 I had the HSG which discovered that the left tube was partially blocked and there was no way a pg could make it through there. Whether that was caused by the lap surgery, or whether my tubes were always bad and my DS was some "miracle" baby that made it through we will never know because there was no baseline info on the status of my tubes.

The point is, even though I did get pg years ago, and all was fine, that doesn't *prove* that my tubes were o.k.

I was not even allowed to start my IVF cycle until my bad tube was removed, and even the stub of my right tube was removed.

The test is really not that bad (mine was definitely uncomfortable), but IMO, totally worth it. Trust me, tubal pregnancies are NOT fun...honestly, I'd want to know for sure that my tubes were good before doing anything. JMHO - after what I've been through, I'm a big advocate of the HSG...

Re: Has anyone not had an HSG?

I agree with Gerty too, my RE did a HSG even though he said mostlikely it will come back fine because I did have two pregnancies (even though I m/c) And he was right, it was fine, but he just wanted to rule everything out.

Re: Has anyone not had an HSG?

I am allergic to the contrast iodine they use for an HSG, so they did a water sono instead. I got lucky and they saw everything they needed to that way.

I was given the option and I absolutely would not go ahead with any treatments without having one.

Wanted toalso add I believe that is mainly because I have not been able to evenget pg again since my mc in March of 2007.
