Re: Has anyone ever seen "Hostel"?

I liked the movie - but yes, there were scenes I could not watch... anything to do with severing an achilles heel is never good viewing, IMO...

I usually like scary and gory movies, but Hostel disturbed me more than any movie I have ever seen. I couldn't get those images out of my head for a long time. Sick film.

Re: Has anyone ever seen "Hostel"?

I dont know what's the matter with me bc I am usually scared of my shadow but I watched this just the other night by myself at 2am and I wasnt freaked out at all. The story stayed with me and it was definitely gross but I've seen worse. I watched the Hills have Eyes a few weeks ago and had a similar reaction. Creepy as hell though, esp the part with the Asian girl.

Re: Has anyone ever seen "Hostel"?

you know what disturbs me most about this movie? the look of happiness and excitement on the faces of the torturers. and also the fact that i watched something on bravo where the writer said he got the idea for the movie when he heard that in asia somewhere you can pay $10k to walk into a room and shoot a man! it disturbs me to think that something like this is possible!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

SIL told me about The Hills Have Eyes and I haven't gotten up the nerve to watch that after she gave me Hostel, lol.

Its not that the movie is "scary" I would label it as GORY. Nasty. Scary leaves me on the edge of my seat. Gory movies make me want to barf. I cant stand gore. I saw Hostel in the theater, and had to close my eyes through half of the movie.

Thank you! I totally agree. the following 2 movies, however, do have some gore in them, but truly scared the crap out of me:

Wolf Creek
High Tension (Haute tension)

I'm not counting the classics - Exorcist, Shining, Omwn, etc - am referring to the newer movies out there...

Wolf Creek

*shudders in fear* Ooooh, this one really really disturbed me. It was on again tonight and I started to torture myself by watching and I had to turn it off. Very sick. Maybe that's why Hostel didn't bother me so much, the scare factor vs the gore factor.

ITA with you guys about the gore factor. it wasnt so much that Hostel scared me, it was more like it made me physically ill from how graphic it was.

The funny thing is that Exorcist and The Shining didnt scare me...they intrigued me. for me it was more of a psychological thriller for both, not much in the way of killing or slashing, kwim. they are, of course, classics but i didnt have the same reaction with those 2 as i did with Hostel. in fact, i've never had the reaction i had with any other horror flick as i had with Hostel!Chat Icon

I read about this - the story about places like this is the following:

I forget which Asian country this stemmed from originally, but poor men were given the option to provide for their families by offering themselves up to be shot by some sick f*cks who wanted to experience what killing was like, and would pay big bucks to do it. The agreement is the man signs that he will do this, and his family will be provided for.

So, from what I hear, its not unwilling people kidnapped and torutred like in the movie. I am sure this happens somewhere though - DH says - if someone thought of it, then it is already happening, but the nature of the story that inspired hosetl was the one about poor men volunteering this to provide for their families, which I find heartbreaking.

Re: Has anyone ever seen "Hostel"?

the director said he got the idea for the movie b/c he heard of a place in Thailand where you can pay $10, 000 to shoot someone in the head.
