Has anyone checked a laptop w/their baggage?
Between my cameras and a laptop I have way too much carry on baggage - should I check the laptop? The camera is far more valuable to me! 
Bury it in a suitcase in between clothing - what do you think?

I did once- by mistake though. I had put it in the front part (the zippered part) - not in its bag b/c I had planned on carrying the luggage on the plane and taking the laptop out to put in the back of the seat on the flight- but forgot and ended up checking that bag.  Luckily for me it didn't get damaged- but I don't know that I would do it again...

IMO i wouldn't. I would try to bury the camera somewhere on my carry on luggage/pocketbook.
can the camera fit in your laptop case?

I agree with the above posters. You wouldn't want your luggage to be missing with your laptop inside. Just take a big bag..and shove everything inside of it. I took a beach bag and they let me take it on. Also, can you put the cameras inside your pocketbook? Because that doesn't count as your carry on.

This is what I did in the past. It's a pain to lug all that stuff around, but it's better then getting lost or damaged.

I wouldn't, and I wouldn't check my camera either.
I know too many people who have had their luggage opened, items stolen, bags disappeared. In all cases the airlines did next to nothing to compensate. 
I also knew someone who was a baggage handler at JFK, she said its a free for all.

I wouldn't. On the last trip I went on the airport damaged my luggage badly  . If my laptop had been in there I would have been seriously annoyed.

I wouldn't pack either one of them in my luggage.
Aren't you allowed a carry-on AND a personal item? A laptop case counts as a personal item... so if you can forego a purse and put your wallet, etc. in your carry-on or laptop case, I'd do it that way.

even if you packed it and it wasn't stolen, I give it a 50% chance that it breaks during the trip... they hurl around suitcases rather roughly......
Definitely pack both the camera and laptop together......

Not a chance. I carried my laptop & my camera. We had a roll carryon which we put the laptop at the top (because it has to go through security on its on) & my camera in another bag.

I wouldn't.
All camera equipment and laptop are in carry-ons.
Do laptops have lithium batteries?
I saw a notice at the airport that as of July, 2008, all equipment with lithium batteries must be carry on and checked at security. You can no longer check a lithium battery.

I Did it once like 7 years ago and my laptop was completely busted. I did what you said, bury it under a bunch of clothes. Remember now they can search your bag too, it could get stolen as well...

I did once...nothing happened to it, but I was a nervous wreck. I think in 2006 there was some big thing going on and nobody was allowed carry on luggage except for what you can carry in a clear plastic bag (passport, etc). I was afraid of taking any carry-on luggage so I packed everything in my suitcase. Now, you can take 3 oz. of liquid and such, but when I was traveling it was very strict for a little while.
ETA: I buried it inbetween clothese.

DON'T check your laptop. Somehow your going to have to figure out how to carryon your camera and laptop. Lap tops like GPS' are the hottest commidity. Chances are it won't be there when you open your luggage. Or it could be damaged if it's still there.

I wouldn't. One of my Partners here did that, and wouldn't you know, the laptop was stolen. The airline did nothing to reimburse.

My coworker tried to when we were travelling together for work earlier this year and the people at the check in counter said that you were not allowed to check laptops.
I wouldn't have done it anyway.

I did I think about 2 years ago. I was coming from Georgia . This was the day when there was a terorist scare and they wouldn't even let you bring a backpack on international flights. So I had to check in my LT . I was very, very scared of what was going to happen with it. but it was fine.

DH IS a baggage handler at JFK and no, I would never pack anything of value in my suitcase!!! Too many hands touch the bag. Not just the baggage handlers but TSA also has permission to go through your bag! You never know what may happen. If it's not stolen, it can very easily get damaged. It's just not worth it.

There is no way I would check a laptop or anything of any value - Between watching them throw the bags unto the belts to get onto the planes and you never know who will open your bag - just not worth the chance that it won't get stolen or broken. I don't think the airlines take responsibility for items such as laptops either.
