Hard wood in the kitchen?

I can't believe the differing opinions on this that I've found online. Some people say its fine, others say not to do it.

Does anyone have hardwood in the kitchen? Do you have dents or scratches? We are renovating and I am torn. I love the look, but I will hate dents and scratches. We have no pets, but we do have three DC.

Thanks for any insight!

I'm personally not a fan of it. It's just not my style, but that's just me.

We have it - we have one big open space for kitchen, dining area, living room. It has some scratches and maybe a couple dents from use, but it's really not a big deal.

I have it and love it -- we have a complete open floor plan -- kitchen/living room/dining room -- so it would look very odd for the kitchen area to have a different type of flooring than the rest!

Hard wood in the kitchen?

Open kitchen as above poster says, and i wouldn't want it any other way. Hardwood though out. Old kitchen had tiles and removed it and added in hardwood floor

Re: Hard wood in the kitchen?

I have HW floors in the entire house, except the kids BR, their playroom, the bathrooms.....and the kitchen. We have a stone tile floor & I couldn't imagine wood in there. I've dented my HW floors just from dropping things, the amount dropped in the kitche, it would have been a mess!

Open floor plan. Hardwood throughout.
I actually just sold my house yesterday, the kitchen was what sealed the deal.
Warm floor & feet, no dents or scratches. No complaints.

Re: Hard wood in the kitchen?

I have stranded bamboo in the kitchen and dining room. Had it for several years. No scratches or dents. I actually have samples that I let people take a hammer to, and unless they slam super hard with the edge of the hammer (which would make a tile shatter into a thousand pieces), it never dents.
I've also put a sample of the bamboo outside in the sun, rain, snow, temp variations, etc for an entire year. After a year of pure abuse, it was still structurally sound, and a light sanding would bring it back to looking brand-new.

Re: Hard wood in the kitchen?

we have wide plank quarter sawn white oak in most of our house including our kitchen. we had tile in the kitchen until last year & hated trying to keep the grout clean. DH ripped up the tile & we had the hardwood extended from our entry, living/dining room into the kitchen & down the hall.
it completely changed the look of the house, it appears so much bigger now. I love the way the wood looks. Its easy to clean.
We even have it in our guest bathroom, its been there about 5 years with zero problems.

Hard wood in the kitchen?

im glad this was asked bc we are considering a kitchen remodel and are debating on what to do with the floor

my concern was more water then anything...my crazy step mother seems to run around drying off the smallest drips of water if it gets on her hardwood floors...and with 2 kids and me being a messy cook, thats the last thing i want to deal with. bu tim not sure if its a problem, or my step mother being a crazy person

We had it in our last house and I loved it. We had one spot with a scratch/dent other than that it held up great. We were always dropping stuff and had no problems. It always cleaned up great too.

Same. We're renovating our new home and just got the floors installed so we will see! I plan on putting a runner in the kitchen to prevent a ton of wear down

We're putting strand bamboo everywhere, including the kitchen. I prefer the look of one continuous floor throughout.

i dont have wood floors in my kitchen but i do have it throught out the rest of the first floor; it came with the house if i had a choice i would have pefered pergo floors less worrying about scratches and dents.

I love it. I love the continuity it gives from the rest of the house into the kitchen. It also gives a very high end look, imo. I haven't had a problem with scratches or dents at all. I am not a fan of tile. It looks nice sometimes, but like another poster said it is cold, and grout is hard to keep clean.

Re: Hard wood in the kitchen?

Another vote for wood flooring. I have it in my kitchen and I love the way it looks and the way it feels without shoes on. It has normal wear and tear but it still looks great after a few years. I have tile in my bathroom and if you go with the tile I would highly recommend under floor heating (radiant?). It makes it so much warmer and more comfortable to walk on. Good luck with your decision!

Re: Hard wood in the kitchen?

My parents have hard wood in their kitchen. My mom hates it because of water/liquids spilling. It also does get scratched a lot but it's beautiful!

Agreed! If you are worried about the wear and tear you could always get the tile that looks hardwood. If your are worried about the wear and tear of wood of wood overtime.
