Happy Candice Day

Today is Candice's Birthday. Everyone needs a Candice in their lives. She's that girl that under extreme pressure can make you laugh & not take life so seriously. The boss's daughter - specifically my old boss's daughter.

She was going to school in Paris for her Masters in International Business. She was writing her thesis in International Business for her Master degree.

My boss was the Event Director who ran some major events in Manhattan. We would be working until 2am & Candice would be "working" with us. Her job was in direct conflict with my job. My job was to make sure we met the printer's deadline for the 4-color journal ads for our event, to make sure that everyone's flight arrangements were made, each prize donation was received, every check was counted, even if it meant working into the wee hours. Candice's job was to convince us not to do any work.

For those that do event management, you know the type of person. You scout out important sponsors to make sure they are happy. She was there to scout out men. Your goal is to make sure the event runs smoothly; her goal is to meet the rich guy so she doesn't have to work. You've just told the distinguished, elderly Ambassador to the Holy See the sequence of events for the evening. Candice is the one that leans over to you & whispers, "He's got a nice azz for an old man." as we walks away. She's the person that while you are registering celebrities for the event, she's there with a giggle & a smile. When you're lugging the prizes to the first tee, she's missing. While my boss was busy flipping out, Candice was arranging for glasses of wine to be delivered to the staff (even though we weren't supposed to drink at events) and telling the waiters how hungry we were. We couldn't count on her to work, but we could count on her for food, wine, to make my boss smile, and to make a grueling day more fun. In fact I still smile when I think of how angry my boss would get at her daughter, only to have Candice crack a joke & break up a tense situation.

Today she would have been 35 years old. Her birthday has been on my calendar for the decade she's been gone. I can't take it off. It's there to remind me that she took life seriously. What I guess I mean is that she was serious about living her life fully, having fun & getting Type A people to have fun too.. She lived more in her 25 years than most people live in a lifetime.

So in honor of her, here's the question:

Who is the Candice in your life? The person who makes you laugh when stressed? Who makes your job more fun?

Wow, hmm... not sure if I have a Candice in my life right now

After reading this the person who came to my mind was my friend's mother - I think she was everyone's Candice. Always cracked jokes, always took care of us kids, always supported us... she was my Candice even though we didn't work together. And she is no longer with us either. It's been 3 years that she died of lung cancer.

How did Candice die? You don't have to answer, it just makes me so sad to hear of someone die so young.

I would have to say one of my best friends Erin. She is not the one to dissappear when work needs to be done, she is actaully a very hard worker. But she can crack a joke at anything and make me laugh!

My two best friends at work are my Candice's- they do exactly what you describe for me every day.

And I like to think I am their Candice. Or so they have told me.....

I didn't work with my Candice either. SHe was my best friend since childhood.Her name was Teresa. She could make me howl with laughter even at serious events. She was a part of me. It has been 3 years since my world has gone silent due to her passing. I miss her everyday! I can always recall an adventure we had when I am sad and get a good laugh when I need to.
