Halle Berry Ordered to Pay $16K a Month in Child Support
Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry have finally reached a settlement regarding child support payments for their 6-year-old daughter, Nahla.
Superior Court Judge Scott Gordon approved the agreement, which calls for the Oscar-winning actress to pay $16,000 a month to her ex-boyfriend, or nearly $200,000 a year. This is in effect until Nahla turns 19 or graduates from high school, whichever comes first.
Berry, 47, will cover their daughter's school tuition (estimated at $30,000 a year), but she and Aubry, 38, will split health care expenses. Berry must also pay the Canadian model a retroactive payment of $115,000 and $300,000 to his attorneys to cover the costs of their custody dispute.
In 2012, the former couple was involved in a bitter custody quarrel, with a judge blocking the actress from moving their daughter to France. After a nearly year-long court battle, Berry and Aubry eventually reached an agreement, and the two share equal custody of Nahla.
The actress gave birth to Nahla in 2008 after dating Aubry for two years. They broke up in April 2010.
Berry wed Olivier Martinez, 48, in July 2013. They have an 8-month-old son, Maceo-Robert.

The legal argument is if the child lives in both households (joint custody situation), the standard of living is equal in both places.
There was a similar case several years ago but the ex-wife was demanding a seemingly INSANE amount of money each month. I can't remember the figure or the case but I do remember reading an article with the legal defense for it. It puts both parents on a financial level playing field so kids don't feel provided for differently at one house over another.
Technically, my BF was supposed to pay her ex-DH $50. a month for this reason but they just worked it out some other way.

I remember a similar issue came up with Salma hayek's husband and his other child. The mother was saying he's a billionaire and his daughter with Salma Hayek had trust funds and real estate being held for her and therefore his other child should be afforded the same things.

It definitely sounds crazy. There is no doubt that a kid doesn't "need" that might to be supported. But I suppose the courts and lawyers have the mindset that if she lives a certain lifestyle with her mother - then that lifestyle should be continued at her father's house.
The only thing I can think of would be to prevent parental alienation. For example if she's living in a mansion with her mom, full security detail, and personal chefs, etc. she has grown accustomed to that life. Then she has to go to her dad's house where it's a smaller location, not as nice, no "designer" things, etc. I would bet that as time went on there could be a chance that the child would not want to go with their other parent because they don't want to downgrade where they are staying.
Utterly and completely shallow I know - but I believe there could be some merit to it.

Something similar happened to Jim Carrey. The mom said that she needed the money to keep her dd accustumed to the lifestyle she had with her dad.
I have no idea if it held up, but it does happen.
