Had anyone's child had dental work under anesthesia

Hello!

If you're child has had this may I ask if the anesthesia was covered under your insurance

I took my daughter to my dentist for a checkup
She had 3 cavities. Figures her twin brother who loves candy had none lol

He recommended we take her to a kid dentist so she could have gas

We went today. They found one more cavity

My daughter has a form
Of epilepsy. It was their recommendation to put her out and do all the work at once. They didn't want to risk her having a seizure in the chair due to the movements,if she got afraid the lights et.

I said ok I would speak with my husband about it

The cost for the dental work is covered. We have insurance The anesthesia we would have to pay up front and they will submit it through our medical and she said there is a 60 percent chance we may get some
Back

Just curious if it was covered for anyone else

It's not cheap lol. 1300 bucks Chat Icon

No experience but I would call your insurance to find out exactly what they cover. I would also try your medical insurance not just dental since her need for general anesthesia is due to a medical condition.

For some reason, what they told you about a 60% chance is really irritating to me...why didn't they just say they can't tell you if it's covered, call your medical insurance provider.
I had anesthesia once for a dental procedure, but it was so long ago, I'm sure my parents wouldn't recall if they got the money back.
Good luck, I hope you get it reimbursed.

Pretty sure it should be covered for a medical condition like epilepsy.

May be that the Anesthesia group doesn't take any/your insurance and they will charge a rate (about $1000 is pretty standard). Then you will get reimbursed by your insurance (but probably half of that because that's how insurance goes). To go through insurance, you could find a group that uses a hospital for their under anesthesia procedures (but it may not be worth it if you love your dentist).

Medicine stinks. I just had a 10 minute (non elective) procedure this year under anesthesia and owe $2000 because of deductibles and out of pocket charges... and we pay a fortune in medical insurance (not a high deductible plan). Ok. Gripe over.

Yes my son just had it done on Monday and 6 cavities! The anesthesia was $1200 isn't that crazy plus I had to pay $480 for dental work out of pocket. He did fine under the gas. He woke up groggy and a little out of it but by dinner time he was back to himself. Oh and my son is 4 years old.

My daughter has epilepsy and her dentist has filled her cavities in the office - without sweet air. He is quick and takes breaks for her. She is a good patient though. He did say if she ever needed major stuff he would do it at the hospital and under anesthesia.

We just went last week for a filling and she started crying - I didn't think we would get though it... he said if he can't do - he can't do it. Not worth the risk and he would try again in a few weeks. He let her take a break and she calmed down and was able to finish. It really was a total of 20 minutes and that was with all the breaks

If your daughter is a relatively easy going patient - you could get them done without having to put her under. Just may take 3 or 4 visits

Also want to add that my DD had a cavity done with sweet air recently and it was a breeze. I was a nervous freaking wreck and she was beyond amazing with it. The sweet air relaxed her to the point that she didn't even realize she got a needle in her mouth. She came out of it completely unfazed and not scared of the dentist at all.

I know your daughter has a bit of a different situation , OP, and they want to err on the side of caution, but it's just a thought

They wont use sweet air on them. But my dentist was so great and able to get it done 2x without it!

I would think your medical insurance would pick t up if the dental didn't- she needs it due to a medical condition.

Seems like she might just have teeth that are more prone to cavities. With her health issues maybe also ask if they can put a sealant or something on her teeth to help prevent future cavities.

What about it being done in a hospital? My DH's little cousin had a ton of cavities when he was about 5/6 and had to done in the hospital with rental anesthesia.
