Got bad news today **Update**
I just got some bad news. My ob called me and said that the baby has a calcification on his/her heart which is also a soft marker for Down syndrome. He told me that because its the only marker and my ultrascreen results came back normal that I shouldn't worry and that it would probably disappear by the time the baby is born. I'm so upset and of course can't stop worrying. I'm meeting with a genetic counselor on Monday. Has this ever happened to anyone and the baby turned out to be just fine?
Update:
We met with the genetic counselor today and she really helped to put her minds at ease. She told us that the odds of this child having Down syndrome are 1/46,000. She offered us many tests including an amnio and a few different blood tests that we declined because we feel confident in the numbers. Thank you for sharing your positive stories and for the prayers and good vibes!

Got bad news today
I had that in addition to a 2nd soft marker, but my blood results did not indicate a high risk, so after meeting with the genetic counselor twice we decided not to move fwd with add'l testing (Maternity21, amnio, etc). I've had sonos every 4 wks since and at 21 wks both soft markers were gone.

Thank you. They found this at my anatomy scan yesterday and I'll have another sono at 28 weeks to see if it is gone. Praying it is. It sucks worrying.

Re: Got bad news today
I went through a scare last week myself. We had out NT scan and combined with the blood work it put us at a risk of 1/11 for Down's. I had a CVS done and was negative for Down's. We still have to get an echocardiogram done at 18 weeks.
I do believe soft markers are fairly common. Words of advice, the genetics counselor will probably scary the ever living ___out of you. They will most likely offer you an amnio or maternit21 testing at this point. Maternit21 takes about 10 days to come back (sometimes up to 2 weeks). They will also tell you about all the other tests you can have in addition to the amnio such as microarray on the sample obtained from the amnio.
Make a list of questions to bring with you. and stay off GOOGLE! it's the devil! I found a lot of suppport on this board when I was going through what we went through last week and it truly helped get me through the stress of deciding what to do and waiting.
that all turns out well.

Re: Got bad news today
A lot of women write about soft markers which end up disappearing with time. I am sure yours will too. Although it is natural to worry, if your dr says they will probably disappear, they probably will!

My DD had the same thing. I met with a genetic counselor too. It was nerve wracking, but everything turned out fine. Just like it will with your LO. Hugs to you!!

Re: Got bad news today
Is it an echogenic cardiac focus (white spot on the heart)? If so, my son had the same thing at our 20 week scan and I was also told not to worry since it was the only marker. By 30 weeks, it was gone and he is now a perfectly healthy 4.5 yr old. I know it is easier said than done, but please try not to worry too much about it. Everything is most likely fine!

Exact same thing here with my 3 year old daughter. I was extremely stressed out by the news, but everything turned out just fine! Good luck. I'm sure everything is fine. I feel like sometimes technology makes things worse.

Re: Got bad news today
I had this problem with one of my twins. We had fetal echos done and maternity 21 test..for other reasons than just this one soft marker..but everything was fine. Baby girl is 3 months now, and no problems.
