Good Sam NICU...any thoughts?
Ok, b/c I worry about needless things, I am looking for any info on the NICU at Good Sam. If you have/had any experience with them, pls feel free to share. Also, under what circumstances would they have to move the baby to SB. In other words, what is beyond their scope at Good Sam. Feel free to share good and bad. I am not yet married to my OB and am still have a consult with a practice that delivers at Stony Brook for next week! TIA!

Re: Good Sam NICU...any thoughts?
Well, I delivered at SB and DS wound up being in NICU for a week. I was thrilled with all of the nurses. They were amazing and caring and gentle. While I prayed that nothing went wrong w/ DS, it did, and I was so glad to be in the best NICU on LI, and know that DS was receiving the best care.

DS spent almost 2 weeks in the good sam NICU... i cannot say enough WONDERFUL things abou the NICU unit!!
all the nurses were AMAZING! the doctors talked to you ever single day & gave an update as soon as they did their rounds... they were VERY honest about talking about when they thought DS would be discharged
the nurses helped me to try & breastfeed DS & were very enouraging about it!!
im not sure what you mean about what would need to happen for the baby to be moved to stonybrook -- but DS was born at 34 1/2 weeks & was on oxygen & IV meds & the whole NICU dept was wonderful & knew what they were doing!
HTH -- any questions feel free to fm me

Re: Good Sam NICU...any thoughts?
DS spent 12 days in NICU in Good Sam and I can't say a bad word about them. Nurses were great, I could come and visit DS at any time, even at night, I called everyday around 11-12pm to check on him, before I went to sleep, they were very patient with me, helped me breastfeed and were there for DS and me. I wasn't big fan of one of the doctors, but overall everyone was very helpful and informative, especially Dr. Brenda. You can FM me if you want more info.

Re: Good Sam NICU...any thoughts?
A friend of mine, her son was born 12 weeks premature and he spent months in the NICU at good sam. She was very happy with everything. The nurses she said were wonderful. Her son is now a happy and healthy 1 1/2 year old.

Re: Good Sam NICU...any thoughts?
I think it would have to be a very extreme case to be transfered to another NICU.
I say this only because Good Sam's NICU is pretty highly rated. I think in cases like surgery open heart, brain, etc they would transfer to SB or Columbia. You are in very good hands at Good Sam and can be really well assured that if you deliver there the baby will likely stay there.
To be honest I know that Good Sam actually has a huge working relationship with Winthrop so I'm not sure about where they would send the baby whether it be SB or Winthrop, but I really really can't see them transferring out for anything less than surgery in which case they wouldn't go to Winthrop.
Hope this helps.

Re: Good Sam NICU...any thoughts?
I believe GOod Sam is a level 2 NICU and Stonybrook is Level 3. Obviously Stonybrook is better equipped to deal with more serious issues....that being said, my son was born 10 weeks early and spent 6 weeks in the NICU (St. Charles, not Good Sam. However alot of the nurses work at both hospitals) there was talk of him going to Stonybrook when he was first born, but since there was nothing "major" wrong with him besides being so small, he stayed at St. charles. There was also talk of him being transferred when they thought he had an intestinal infection (thank god he didn't have an infection).
