Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

Yes, I have to and I do want to. I just on intend on being home a little longer than my regular maternity allows (paid).

I would loose my house if I didnt work.

I knew that having children would involve me working, f/t. I am lucky to have a mom to watch my children.
I also know with 3 to financial care for, That will change things a bit too, esp 2 of the same age!

I dont think i would have it in me to be SAHM. Why I def give credit for those who are.

I work part time now (3 days) and will be going back to the same. Since I dont get a long maternity leave (I go back the first week of may)- I may only go back 2 days till June. Then I will go back to 3 days once sept comes and school starts again. I am also lucky to have family watching the baby the first 7 months, and then my SIL will watch her 2 days in sept, so she will only be in daycare one day.

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

I will go back to work after 12 weeks. I have a very demanding job.. often work long hours, etc.
I plan to try to keep my schedule as regular as possible after the baby is born.. especially given that my DH works overnights. It will be my job to take the baby to daycare and pick him or her up.
We just bought a house a couple of months ago.. have renovations we want to do and with a baby on the way.. we cannot afford for me to not be working...plus I really enjoy what I do for a living

I'll go back to work when the baby is around 8 months, same as I did with DD. If we could do it all on 1 salary I would happily stay home with my little ones.

12 weeks and then back to work.

Makes me very sad to think of going back to work when the baby is still so little, but we need both of our salaries.

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

With DD I stayed home for 5 months.

By the time she was about 10 weeks, I was going crazy at home and wanted to go back to work. As it got closer to going back I didn't want to.

I went back FT and that first week was awful. We decided to see if they would let me work PT - 3 days a week, and if they said no, then I was going to quit and be a SAHM. They ok'd my PT status, but now my office moved, I have a long commute to a job I'm not that happy with.

After DC#2 comes along, I'm fairly certain I will not be going back to work.

DH and I are trying to find a way for me to be able to stay home one year. We are not sure if it is going to work yet or not but its something we are working on. I am a teacher and can take some time off but maternity leave in my school district stinks. We have to start calling some child care options in case our plan doesn't work out.Chat Icon

We keep going back and forth with this. Ideally I would like to stay home especially since what I make would just go to daycare costs and I would much rather be home with the baby then sending him to daycare. I'm trying to finagle a way to work from home, what I do could definitely be done remotely, but I just don't know if my company would do it.....

This is exactly my situation. We could live on DH's paycheck, but wouldn't be comfortable. However, I don't want to go to work to hand over my paycheck to daycare. I'd rather stay home with my baby at that point.

I can work from home as well, just not sure my company will go for it. Hoping they will compromise with 3 days home, 2 days in the office.

Plus I'm due a big salary adjustment so depending on whether or not that goes into effect by the time I have DC will play a BIG role on our final decision.

If this is your first DC, you may be surprised how you feel after the baby is born. I thought I would love staying at home but it turns out I am the type to want to go to work. Even if I worked just to pay my bills to me it's worth it just to have adult exposure, plus my son gets so much out of daycare, it's win-win!!!!

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

im going back....most likely after 6-8 weeks. we dont qualify for fmla.

i would like to stay home but in this economy i dont want to bank on just 1 paycheck...especially if we just had the 1 salary and lost it - healthcare is expensive, and then we def wouldnt be able to pay our bills.

so that being said...im returning and we're going w/daycare even though itll be taking a good chunk out of my pay.

I am taking approx. two and half years off from my job.

I return to the same loccation, at the same salary. I'll still be able to retire with a pension after doing 20 years w/o having to make up those two years.

I work for NYC.

I am very pleased.

I'll be going back after 10 weeks.

I kinda wish I could stay home but we can't afford it financially just yet.

DH and I were just recently discussing our finances, and I think I may try to take a 6 month leave of absence from work....I just need to get up the nerve to ask my boss.

This is 100% my situation. Most likely I will stay home b/c i dont think my job would allow me to work from home. Even though it's the easiest job and all I need is a laptop and phone.
It doesn't pay for me to make just enough money for daycare. I might as well be my own childs daycare :)

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

With baby #1, I took 20 weeks off (only 8 weeks were paid) and I went back f/t. When my son turned 1, I left my job, took the summer off, and found a p/t consulting job in the fall. I currently work there about 20 hours a week mostly condensed into 2 days (sometimes 3) and it really is the best of both worlds. Once the twins come I am not sure what is going to happen. I would like to go back to work, but I would have to figure out childcare. It wouldn't pay for me to put the kids in daycare p/t (almost the same price as f/t daycare) to work p/t. My MIL watches DS now so I was thinking of asking her to watch all 3 and hire a mothers helper to help out.

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

I am not pregnant but I just wanted to chime in because I have done all three since DS was born.

After he was born, I went back FT at 12 weeks and I loved it. I loved my job, had a great childcare situation (ILs) but we felt bad having my ILS watch DS FT and DH didnt want DS in daycare so I left my company and got a PT job.

Didnt love hte job but it was very flexible and worked great having 3 days in the office and the rest at home with DS. But with the economy I was laid off and have been home nearly 11 months.

All in all I like working PT the best. It was a great balance. SAH is wonderful but as DS gets older it gets more "challenging"

My suggestion is to wait to make your decision. Lay out hte #s to see what options you have but wait to make your decision. I always wanted to be a SAHM but honestly by 12 weeks I couldnt wait to return to work. I love and miss having that separate "life" that is just mine. You never know how you will feel until you have the child and see how your life changes.

Re: Going back to work after Baby is born....

I'm hoping to go back to work around 3 months. I have the opportunity to work from home 2-3 days per week so i will only actually be leaving the house 2 days a week.

I wish I could stay home but it's not possible for us right now. I am a teacher so I am going to take 12 weeks - with the spring break, it will end up being a little more. I will go back mid-May then DH will use FMLA to stay home until my summer vacation starts. I'll take the summer off and stay home then baby will start daycare in Sept. I already have mixed feelings...
