Gizzy got hurt last night
At 4 am DH and I woke up to loud bangs - Gizzy fell down the stairs. (And this wasn't the first time either). He was pretty much OK, walking around, acting normal, but we saw tons of blood everywhere. One of his nails got completely ripped out! DH applied pressure and kept it elevated for a while, then we cleaned it and bandaged it. The vet suggested surgery with anesthesia, but since he is 16 1/2 years old we do not want to give him anesthesia. So now we are just keeping an eye on it and giving him antibiotics.
No more stairs for Gizzy. His hips are so bad now. This is going to be hard since we have a split level house and he is always going up and down. The baby gates are set up now. I feel so bad.

I don't blame you not wanting to put him under at his age.
Bailey once completely lost a nail and everything was fine so I'm sure Gizzy will be too!!!

The entire nail came off -including some tissue at the base. So the vet said we should be OK without surgery. And it is a "pinky" nail so he is not putting pressure on it at all when he walks (no pain at all, he is not limping). So as long as it doesn't get infected we should be fine.

But what the heck was he doing up at that time???
believe it or not, he goes downstairs numerous time throughout the night to eat, drink, & look for crumbs on the floor. Afterthis happened at about 5:30 I had to carry him down to drink. I know I can just pick the bowls up but He is very old so I let him do what he wants.

I'm so sorry that Gizmo got hurt!! I know what it's like to have my little man fall down the stairs. I hope he heals quickly!! Lots of hugs and prayers for Gizmo!! He is so adorable.

Awwww - you would think he is so tired, he would sleep more during the night though
Poor little guy
I would do the same thing if it was Casey - well not the carry up and down - she is 93 lbs 
But i know what you mean

I will that his nail heals. I'm so sorry, it hurts to see our pets get old.
