Giving too much advil?
My son is teething bad with the molars. My mom is always wanting to give him advil/motrin.
I'm hesitant about this because I feel there are other ways to remedy the teething (chewing toys, orajel, amber bracelet).
She watches him during the day and she is very over dramatic about things. She will say he's completely miserable and I don't know if he really is or if he's just whiny and cranky.
She claims the only thing that helps him is advil and is giving it to him twice a day.
I normally just give it to him at night if he's cranky and putting his hands in his mouth.
Today I lied to her and told her that I gave it to him this morning before I dropped him with her. I just didn't want her giving it to him twice today because I think it's too much. But I also don't want him to be suffering.
How much do you think is too much advil?

Re: Giving too much advil?
I don't think twice a day is bad as long as it's not for an extended period of time. But if you gave it twice a day for say 3-4 days I don't think it would do any harm.
The box says every 6-8 hours I believe.

She's been doing it all week which is why I"m concerned. I regret giving her a bottle of it (but she prob would've just bought her own anyway if I didn't.)
I just feel like maybe she's giving him the quick fix (advil) rather than trying to help with other ways (frozen fruit, frozen chew toys, orajel).

Yeah a week to me is too much. I only like to do advil for a few days. DH was an overgiver of it too. He'd give it to her everytime she fussed. It bothered me too.

This is too much imo and I think you did the right thing. I'm MIL is the quick fix type person and we tend to find others ways unless it is really bad.

I'd have her stop. Or maybe alternate with tylenol if it's really that bad. Too much advil can't be good. As an adult, if I take it regularly for several days, I get a peptic ulcer.
We only give motrin for a fever. Amber necklace and hylands for teething but we rarely even have to give that. Once we gave tylenol. But H only has 2 teeth still lol. We're not at the molars stage yet... I don't think.

I only gave Tylenol. If possible I'd save the Advil for nighttime and if needed give Tylenol during the day.

Giving too much advil?
Thanks for the replies. I'm going to tell her to not give him advil. This is not going to go over well but it's what I feel is right and best for my son, so that is what matters, right?

Re: Giving too much advil?
I never gave anything. Honestly, my kids were never cranky with teeth...
But MIL thought they were teething at 3 months (hands in mouth, drool, IMO normal baby stuff. Both kids got their teeth just before 1 & I woukd have been "treating teething" for almost a year.

Giving too much advil?
Gave Advil only at bedtime when she was more fussy. Maybe did it for like 2 or 3 nights when the molar was popping through. Once it came through, nothing.

Giving too much advil?
I think that's way too much. I only used to give Tylenol at night if I felt my DD really needed it. Never consistently though.

Re: Giving too much advil?
I only have Motrin at night for teething, and it was when they cut the molars and canines. During they day, chomping on cold washcloths helped, and just distracting them. They were a bit fussy, but it passed.
I agree with you, tell her to refrain from giving it during the day.

Re: Giving too much advil?
it really doesn't matter what the rest of us did or think it 'right' or 'too much' -
The point is that YOU are not comfortable with him taking that much advil, and you have every right to tell your mother and expect her to listen to you - It doesn't matter that it's your mother, it doesn't matter if you pay her or not - KWIM?
My suggestion to possibly appease her would be to tell her to give him tylenol before he goes down for his nap, b/c laying down builds the pressure and the pain.
But while he's awake, unless his pain is REALLY bad, in which case he'd probably be crying, really crying not just cranky and fussy - she could do all of the other things you would suggest -

Re: Giving too much advil?
This is way to much. My brother ended up getting an illness because of taking too much medication as a kid. Unless prescribed by a physician, please don't self medicate. A week of any medication that is not being prescribed by a doctor is not a good idea.

Re: Giving too much advil?
I don't think twice a day is too much at all, provided he is uncomfortable. My doctors always told me that that was the ONLY thing that will truly meet the level of pain that teething brings on. If you were in pain, would you want to suffer?

Re: Giving too much advil?
I would be livid if ANYONE was giving my child any type of medication without my permission. And I would want to be notified before the dose was given, each and every time. Medications can quickly become dangerous in small children, I would not want someone dosing my child as they see fit.
Furthermore, I can count on one hand the number of times I gave my child Tylenol for teething. Neither of them ever really seemed to be that bothered by it. My theory is kids get fussy for all sorts of reasons and some people NEED to know why and blame teething. I could be wrong though and all kids are different.

Yes, I think that is too much medication. Have you tried Amber teething necklaces?

Did you try them at the same time? I noticed a definite difference when I put 2 on. Might be worth a try!

Unfortunately I lost the first one, that's why I bought another. He's been great all weekend, I think because we kept him busy. My mom thinks she can just leave him to his toys and she can play games on fb, but that only works for about 10 mins before he gets bored. He's very active and likes to be engaged all the time.
