Yep this was bad casting IMO.
I read the book and this was not at all how they portrayed the main character to look

Yes. It was a big thing. She had a drinking problem, so they portrayed her to look very unhealthy, haggard, bloated, etc.
It was a big part of her character development. She was insecure, depressed, felt badly about herself/low self esteem.
This doesn't work.
I pictured more of a situation like when renee zellweger gained all that weight and looked all homely for Bridget Jones Diary

Exactly. I don't get the Emily Blunt choice at all.

Girl on a Train premiere
I read the book a few weeks ago and saw the movie on Friday. I really liked it (so did DH). I thought Emily did a great job - they did the best they could to make her not look so pretty (lots of smeared makeup, stringy hair, etc). She was pregnant when they filmed, but it was early in her pregnancy so she wasn't big until the last scene (which must have been filmed last).
I wish they had cast someone other than Justin Theroux. Chris Evans (Captain America) was originally cast, but dropped out b/c he decided to make some straight to video movie instead. He would have been a better choice b/c he has an innocent look about him that Justin doesn't have.
